bkahler Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Just spotted a split manifold on ebay, 280113191102. I wouldn't say its the prettiest that I've seen but it might work. Brad Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Well, it is done a bit different with the second outlet coming off the side instead of the bottom. Wonder if that would be better and allow room to remove the valve covers...... Quote
Normspeed Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Looks like an early type manifold with the outlet positioned nearer the firewall. I've never seen one with the second outlet on the side. Different. Quote
claybill Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 ya' know...i like it! it will allow access to the valve covers AND easily clear the oil pump which is a big problem with dual ex. you can see where it was cut to insert the block off piece. Quote
Normspeed Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Sure looks like a small diameter on the second outlet though. Mine is smaller than stock on the outside but inner diameter and flange are stock size. The exhaust shop kicked the front pipe outwards for clearance on mine. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Normspeed, I always assumed the purpose of a split manifold was to add dual exhaust and help dump the exhaust faster for a slight bit more power. I noticed in your picture, it looks like you have both going into a single exhaust. Care to expand on that? Quote
Normspeed Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Well you know me Norm, I never miss a chance to blabber. I had this setup made just for the sound. At a cruise night I heard a Jimmy or Chevy pickup with a built six that sounded real good. Asked about his setup and he sent me to a small local muffler shop, Bud's Muffler, No Muff Too Tuff. They made up the same system the pickup had, two 2 inch downpipes into a collector, then 2 1/4 inch single pipe with a single Flowmaster near the back, and a 2 1/4 tailpipe exiting to the right so I don't get fumes when running with the tailgate open. They claim the Flowmaster has a scavenging effect. With that plus running twice the stock pipe capacity to the collector and 2 1/4 the rest of the way is significantly less restriction than the original system. which was what, maybe 1 1/2 inch all the way? But like I say, "it sounds faster than it is" I love the sound and wish I could make up a good digital sound clip for the forum. Technology exceeds the budget. Quote

Norm, this approach would take care of the problem of where to put the second run of exhaust pipe. I may try this on the Chrysler:) One of the main reasons I wanted the flat six was the sound...just love it! Quote
claybill Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 I WOULD SAY THE SPLIT EXHAUST INTO A COLLECTOR WOULD MELD THE SOUNDS TOGETHER...MAKING A PUR-R-R-R-R-R. HAVING 2 SEPARATE PIPES GING BACK SEPARATELY LETS THE FIRST 3 CYL RAP IN SYNC WITH THE BACK 3..GIVING A POP-POP-POP- EFFECT LIKE A HELICOPTER. TESTING THE MUFFLER SYSTEM ON THE DYNO FOR A HARLEY DAVIDSON..THEY FOUND THAT 2 PIPES INTO ONE SCAVENGES BETTER. HENCE, A CROSS OVER PIPE ON THE stock HARLEYS FOR SYSTEM BALANCE. with the look of split pipes. o well. blabber blabber I have the split manifold, heat thing cutout, single pipes all the way back. very very nice.. you can hear me coming over the bridge a mile away..!!! i have a pair of exhaust tips with a silencer thing welded inside for quiet performance... claybill Quote
Normspeed Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 If I had duals all the way back I'd have to try this trick I heard about: One pipe with a medium glasspack, like a 12" to 18" smitty, cherry bomb, or whatchagot, and the other pipe straight all the way back to the bumper with no muffler. Supposed to give quite the rap. Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 Seems the longer I run my Smithies the better they sound. I like the rap-rap when I goose it. Crusing up and down through the hills in high gear at a moderate speed really sounds good. I have a true split with no crossover. Quote
