chesterx
I just purchased an electronic points eliminator for my 51 Cranbrook. Wow! What a differance in starting and performance. I searched for weeks for a Crane Cams 6 volt+ module but I beleive that there are no more to be had. Found a magnetic replacement at Classicheads.com. It was a bit pricey but installed and worked perfectly. So if anyone is interested it was about $180.00 and came from the UK.
Guest 50Plymouth
Good to hear! If you think of it later, post your opinion after its got a good amount of miles and hours on it, as some guys have expressed disappointment with longetivity\reliability in other brands. Norm's Coupe
Actually, if you call Crane Cams and give them the part number you may be able to buy it direct from them. I stopped at their booth several years ago at the Louisville, KY NSRA meet. Gave me their catalog, then mailed me the diagram and part numbers. Have it filed away down in the basement. Just ran across it a few days ago. Thought I had lost it until then.
Guest 50Plymouth
chesterx, do you have the crane cams part# for the 6v unit? Good to have that on record in threads for searching.
Robin (UK)
The ClassicHeads ignition is a Pertronix set-up. I believe that for the distributors in our cars they can't provide a reversible set-up (i.e. the conversion involves a change to the base plate, which means it can't be put back to mechanical points). That's whay Pertronix themselves don't offer the kit. I'm looking at obtaining a spare distributor to undertake this conversion - keeping the original as a spare. Any other advice or reports of experiences would be appreciated. Thanks. Robin.

You bypass the points using their system and just leave them in the car. I'll have to dig out that diagram and literature out of curiosity now. It was for the 6 volt neg. ground system. Don Coatney
Glad the system is working well for you. How did you measure the difference in starting and performance?
Norm's Coupe
Here is the Crane Cam system if anyone is interested. The box replaces the points. The diagram is for 12 volt but it is the same diagram for the 6 volt according to Crane. The number written by hand is what they told me is the model number needed for 6 volt. 6 volt systems work on either positive or negative ground cars. chesterx
I tried ordering the Crane part number from Checker and after several weeks they came back and said they don't carry it. (yet it comes up on their web site). I tried again today and again the order was accepted, we'll see if they come through. As for the Classic Heads part it's still working great and it does require you to remove the origial points mount. It was easy to do but there is no going back. I just bought a stock spare distributor just in case. Car starting was much quicker and responded much quicker when you hit the gas.
chesterx
Several distributors listed on the Crane Cams web site have said this part number is no longer available. I'll try Crane direct in the am. Anyone know of a source?
splat1955
I'd be interested as well to see if Crane still carries the part #. Let us know.

Norm: on your picture of the Crane Cam XR700 Ignition System the written number is wrong. Should be: # 700-0231. http://www.cranecams.com/?show=browseParts&lvl=5&prt=160&action=partSpec&partNumber=700-0231 More bad news: Part Number: 700-0231: Operating Voltage 8 to 18 volts, reverse polarity protected, negative or positive ground. Not compatible with 6 volt electrical systems as these may drop below 4 volts during cranking. Do anybody use the Crane Cam XR700 Ignition System? Does it still work good with 6 volt (neg, ground)? chesterx
Spoke with Crane Cams directly, the neg. 6 volt part has been permanantly deleted and there are none to be had. The 700-0231 is not recommensed for 6 volt use by their techs. because the voltage is too low via design to operate the system. Sorry guys!
