1948PLYP15 Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 12 volt will be more practical… I wanted to go original...cost effective. New to cars this old but love it more than the others! Quote
james curl Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 I realize that you wrote this at 1:00 in the morning, but I think something might have gotten left out of your statement. I gather that you will need to rewire you P-15 so why not go negative ground and 12 volts? Quote
claybill Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 ha ha ! i thought the same. lately i have been considering turning to 12v in my 41 biz coupe. main question is how about the starter etc. it needs to be changed too?..bulbs are easy, gages seem tougher to solve ..what else looms.....? bill Quote
steveplym Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 I switched mine over and couldn't be happier. Rewired it and switched it to 12v negative. Quote
1941Rick Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 Switched mine over a couple of years ago. As for the starter, take it out and have it rebuilt. ie..new brushes and turn the communtator and all will be fine. These guys start so easy the starter hardly has a chance to get spinning. Even my 6v heater is running 12v. Quote
mach0415 Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 If I go to do the 12v conversion, I will prolly go with a more original looking generator, rather than the GM style one. Gotta get the engine back in 'er first, though. Quote
james curl Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 I am still running the 6 volt starter, converted the car to 12 volt in 2007 and I drive it almost every day. I am still running two 00 cables. Quote
hkestes41 Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 What James said. My car was already converted to 12 volt (although it was a total cluster ) when I bought it and still had the 6 volt starter. Rewired the car but kept the starter as was and have been running that way for 5 years. Quote
captden29 Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 i had an old grey marine engine in my 1958 skiff. i converted to 12 volt but could not find a starter for it. i left the 6 volt starter in and about 8 yaears later sold the boat. it always started. as long as you are not cranking for long time frames the 6 volt will spin faster and start the engine just fine without damage to the starter. wish i still had that boat. capt den Quote
