mach0415 Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 I just bought a 1950 D34 230 Flathead, and attached is what I believe to be a Fluid Drive 3 spd. There is a shifter housing on the driver's side. Does anyone have a pic of one? Also, what needs to be changed over to fit the 230 in a 218's place for a 1947 P15? Quote
plyroadking Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 I just bought the same combo last weekend! If your not planning on using the fluid drive unit you will need a 6 bolt flywheel and a standard bell housing to get it to fit in your '47 with a standard transmission. Hopefully your engine and transmission are in better condition than mine was in. Quote
Jim Shepard Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 (edited) Does anyone have a pic of one? This is the fluid drive unit in my 1950 truck. I think they are basically identical to the cars. Hope this helps... Edited February 29, 2012 by Jim Shepard Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 The fluid drive model has a double length bellhousing to accommodate both fluid drive and clutch. The transmission input shaft is also longer. Not sure if you need a different trans or can just change the shaft. Quote
mach0415 Posted February 29, 2012 Author Report Posted February 29, 2012 My plan is to use the 3 speed that my car came with and hook er up with the 230. I am going to rebuild the 218 and turbo charge it with 5psi boost - not a lot. The fluid drive unit will probably be mated to it and stuck into a 50s era Model A sedan street rod. Has anyone ever adapted fluid drive to a T-5? Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 (edited) Most guys are trying to get rid of the FD. I don't mind it if the car came with it but I wouldn't have it if I had a choice. One problem is the length of the input shaft, it goes all the way thru the FD and clutch. If it was mine I would eliminate the FD and either use the T5 or adapt a more modern automatic. Edited February 29, 2012 by Rusty O'Toole Quote
mach0415 Posted February 29, 2012 Author Report Posted February 29, 2012 Yeah, that may be the direction I head toward, as well Quote
