DCurrent Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 I am looking at the underside of my 48 hood and it appears that there is a brace missing. It bows down when the hood is lifted and then when I go to close it again, I have to lift the center rear before I do. Pg 221 in the parts list book shows a strainer-15-28-1. Should my hood have one of these or was it only a 46 or 47 part? If it is supposed to have one does anyone have one for sale! Thanks, Darren Quote
DCurrent Posted February 19, 2012 Author Report Posted February 19, 2012 Jeez, You would think someone would have come along by now and reproduced one by now. Well I know what I gotta do now. Thanks! Quote

randroid Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 Darren, I have been looking\asking\pleading for a hood brace for over twenty years, all to no avail. The sentiment is somewhat split in this forum in that some of the guys don't have or see a need for a brace, some (me) have the deep sag like yours, some guys are happy regardless and whichever camp you follow there are some spring hinges that were not made for them. I've made a couple crude ones with all-thread and some angle iron just to see what it would take to get the job done and have come to the conclusion that a metal brake would be your friend and it wouldn't take much more than that (maybe a small welder) but I don't have access to one. Should you decide to take the plunge and fab one, you may as well fab two or six because there are definitely several of us here looking for one. Count me in if you do it. Anybody else? -Randy Quote
Oldguy48 Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 I'll be watching this thread closely because I too desperately need a hood brace. I've got some ideas in mind for making my own, but I'm open to others ideas also. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 Here's one view of a 46-48 Plymouth hood support.........I don't know which years had one and which did not. There is a difference in the hood spring design, to allow for threaded holes to attach the brace. And, there is a small L shaped center attaching bracket that uses two small nuts and bolts. The support by itself......... How the brace is made to give it strength........ Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) You can see here the two holes with threads for attaching the brace. The brace has elongated holes to allow for some movement/adjustment. Found this pic of how one man tried to make his own support on a P15 coupe. Edited February 20, 2012 by BobT-47P15 Quote
randroid Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 Bob, Thanks for posting those pictures; I guess my description from memory wasn't too accurate. -Randy Quote
DCurrent Posted February 21, 2012 Author Report Posted February 21, 2012 Whew! That last picture is a little crude. But it must work for him. Darren Quote
randroid Posted February 21, 2012 Report Posted February 21, 2012 Darren, I haven't seen that last photo before but I can tell you it didn't work for him because it's a lot like one I made from all-thread and creates a spike in the top of the hood. It's necessary to have the side braces in the lower part of the hood to keep them "pooched-out" to avoid that spike. I don't think it would be necessary to recreate an exact model of the original to make it work but it would need some type of lateral support, maybe something as simple as a strap welded across the top of a vertical piece on each side by the hinges, and then the middle of the hood could be open other than the center adjustment. You're learning why I never successfully made one. -Randy Quote
james49ply Posted February 21, 2012 Report Posted February 21, 2012 I saw one on e-bay, and stupid me didn't buy it. I could have made a few $$ replicating them. Quote
randroid Posted February 21, 2012 Report Posted February 21, 2012 James49ply, James, I'd like you to meet Darren. Darren, say hi to James because the two of you are about to go into business together. Heck fire, you already have one customer. -Randy Quote
