Harold M Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 What is a good way to go thru the carpet to get to the master cyl filler plug? Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 You did not say what vehicle you are working on. So if it is a furd or shiverlay then cut a hole in the carpet. If it is a P-15 Plymouth then pull the rubber mat back to expose the trap door as pictured below. If you have a D-24 then I believe you have carpet but if you pull it back I believe you will find a trap door just above the master cylinder. Quote
40P10touring sedan Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 40 plymouths have a 3x5 access plate under the brake pedal..one bolt removes it but it'll be tight access. Removing the floor board will serve you better for complete access to nearly everything - man I love that! Quote
OldDad67 Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 What is a good way to go thru the carpet to get to the master cyl filler plug? If you don't like having to do that you can make a remote fill and do it from under the hood. Just makes it easy and you tend to check your brakes more often. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 My upholstry guy, when installing my carpet, cut and bound a place on the drivers side where you can raise and fold back the carpet to get to the little door, and then the master cylinder. Sure beats having to pull the carpet loose from under the step plate. Quote
Harold M Posted January 30, 2012 Author Report Posted January 30, 2012 Thanks for the good ideas. I wanted to put my carpet under the threshold rubbers the threshold rubbers I am going to fasten down with push in, black plastic, fastners that are not to easy to remove. Quote
Mark Haymond Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I also had my upholstery guy make a trap door in the 50 Plymouth carpet fabric. So I can raise a small flap of carpet to get to the master cylinder area. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 (edited) The original carpet was made in 2 pieces. One piece went from the back of the car to a few inches in front of the front seat. The other piece ran from the firewall to the front seat. It overlaps the rear piece. For access to the brake master cylinder flip the corner of the carpet over, right in front of the driver seat. For access to the Fluid Drive filler and transmission controls go around to the passenger side and roll back the carpet. The carpet and underlay just lay on the floor, they are not held down by the step plates. There may be a few snaps to hold it in position. Edited January 31, 2012 by Rusty O'Toole Quote
