40P10touring sedan Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Hi folks, my 40 plymouth has the dash somewhat apart at the moment to redo the gauges, steering wheel and sloppy shifter...while in there I noticed it seemed awefully empty under the cowl vent - isn't there supposed to be something under that vent? I have a drain tube from the inside firewall that goes to nothing....doesn't go to the heater{model 50 unit}. Anyone know if I'm missing something...or where to find or make one? Quote
Andydodge Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 The cowl vent drain tube originally ended up going thru the firewall about the middle somewhere........I extended the hose on mine and had it empty at the bottom of the firewall when I stuck a V8 in the car, 39yrs ago..........lol....was fiddling around under the dash today and its still there.......andyd Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 1940 models are very simple. Not much in there to complicate things. I have found little animals there but you don't want that. There is this stuffing inside of the firewall cover it sheds sometimes, Quote
DCurrent Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 I have found little animals there but you don't want that. The animals are suposed to be there to work the heater cage. Darren Quote
40P10touring sedan Posted January 30, 2012 Author Report Posted January 30, 2012 I see two holes for screws or small bolts on either side of the inside of the cowl vent opening, inside the dash...nothing else. Looks like someone removed it long ago. What was it...a tray of sorts...a box....did it run to the top of the heater core? Anyone have a pic of theirs? ..or one of the car? Quote
Smokeybear Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 so you're missing the mechanism that raises the vent?... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Cowl vent diagram for 46-48 Plym from parts manual.......... Nothing underneath it........just lets fresh air directly into the car. At least in mine......not connected to the heater system. Quote
Andydodge Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 As I mentioned the drain tube goes into the firewall, as for anything under the cowl vent............nope, it scoops the air in and dumps it on your feet..........now, if the car has a factory heater then that may have some sort of connection but as I have never seen a factory heater here in Oz I can't comment.......andyd Quote
40plyrod Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Mine has a pan that catches any water that gets by the gasket and channels it to that tube that goes through the firewall. Is that what you think you're missing? Quote
40P10touring sedan Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 so you're missing the mechanism that raises the vent?... No, I have that intact...what I'm missing is some sort of drain box or tray for undernieth the cowl vent, inside. Quote

40plyrod Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I'll try to snap a picture today and post it for you. Quote
40plyrod Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Here's the pictures. The pan is about 3/4" deep and 18 1/2" long by 8" wide and rolls up into the vent opening so that any water that gets past the seal is channeled into the pan and out the drain hose. you can see the extra lip in the last picture taken from the outside.
