plymouthcranbrook Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 I have read a lot of the posts here about rear main seal leaks on flatheads and they seem to go from "Nope, never leaked a bit" to " Seems they all leak some". I have a 52 that has what I believe is the original engine that someone before me has at least refreshed if not rebuilt. It sat for about 10 years until it was repaired and got running this fall. However I now notice I believe to be a moderate real main seal leak after running it for a while. It has not gotten on the road yet, maybe later this year. My question is this- I can live with a a small amount of oil leakage, but am worried that the leak might cause some splashing in the bell housing that might get on my new clutch disk and ruin it. Is this a likely problem or is my nerviousness unfounded? Thanks for any opinions.( I am not planning to pull the engine apart unless absolutely necessary and I don't know if a rope type seal or rubber is what it has since there seems to be a lot of differences from year to year) Quote
54Illinois Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 My Hy Drive and Powerflite transmissions were both covered with oil from rear seal leaks. When pulled apart, the flywheels on both were oil free. There should be an access cover between the motor and trans...pull it and check. Quote
