55 Fargo Posted October 17, 2011 Report Posted October 17, 2011 Hey all, I am in need of a 12 volt gen or GM single wire alt. I have a 12 volt starter, a 12 volt regulator, the ballastvoltage dropper for the coil, but no genny or alt. I am wondering what course of action might be best, find a genny, or go with a GM alternator, either way, I need 12 volts. I am not so sure my Fargo set-up was a 1955, it could very well have been 1956..... Quote
OldDad67 Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 I'm going to use a GM 12 volt generator just because their easy to find and parts are available. Also you can use a wide belt on the 12 volt generator buy using a 6 volt pulley. So it gives you the option of a narrow or wide belt. You can also use a 6 volt generator pulley on a 12 volt GM altenator to keep your wide belt. Lots of options. Hope this helps. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Might as well go with the alternator. They are better and cheaper than a generator. I wouldn't advise junking a generator if you already have one but since you have to buy one anyway, get the alternator. Don't bother with the 1 wire alternator. A regular alternator is cheaper and works better and you only have to run 1 more wire. I would go to a junkyard and get one off a late model but that is just me. If you do this make note of the brackets on your motor and get an alternator to match. Basically there are 3 setups. 1 has the adjuster bolt at 180 degrees to the mounting bolt. The others have the adjuster at an angle, either pointing right or left. Get the one that is closest to what is on your motor now. Cabbage the mounts, adjuster and wiring harness off the car when you get the alternator. Quote
