1940plymouth Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 I was given this photo the other day, it is of my Mother, with her parents taken in the late '40's. Is there is enough of the car to tell what make and year it is? Thanks, Bob Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 Wow, I think it's a convertible. headlight is on the fender. Big round hub cap it could be anything Quote
1940plymouth Posted August 22, 2011 Author Report Posted August 22, 2011 Thanks Rodney, there is no one in the family alive now to ask Quote
Robert Horne Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Are there 3 hinges on the door? 37 and 38 Plymouth/Dodge had 3 hinges, on the 2 door models.. The headlight looks to be mounted on the fender, like the Dodge does, Plymouth on the nose area. Quote
yourpc48 Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 After close to 2 hours of elimination I say 37 Dodge. There are 3 hinges on the door, looking close at the image (I magnified it a bunch) the headlight is on the radiator but the mount is hidden by the shadow from the headlight bucket, the antenna is in the right place and the hinge mounted swan mirror is obstructing the view of the hood ornament at that angle but the mirror is correct. It looks like it was a base model because I see no stainless on the belt line. Also it looks like there may not be a trim ring on the wheel but thats hard to tell for sure. The final thing that makes me think 37 Dodge is the shape of the exposed part of the cowl in front of the door. Look at that area and where the hood closes. Its the same as the pictures I found. Thats my story and Im sticking to it.... Quote
1940plymouth Posted August 23, 2011 Author Report Posted August 23, 2011 Thanks everyone, I appreciate all your help:). Bob Quote
yourpc48 Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Thanks everyone' date=' I appreciate all your help:).Bob[/quote'] Hey I dont know if they made a base model Dodge. You can research it. I notice that the Plymouths dont seem to have the Stainless along the belt line of the body. Without seeing the hood ornament I still go for 37 but may change my mind and say Plymouth. Find one at a car show and take a picture from about that angle and see what you come up with. Have al ittle fun with it. Thanks for sharing the old photo. Quote
Greenbomb Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 The wing window suggests a roadster, to me. did mopar have a roadster then? Quote
yourpc48 Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 The wing window suggests a roadster, to me. did mopar have a roadster then? According to pics I found yes. Quote
yourpc48 Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 Can anyone tell me why some of the 37s have the antanna on the right and some on the left? I first thought it was a Dodge or Plymouth thing but I have seen pics of Plymouths with them on the right and on the left on others. The pic for this thread shows it on the drivers side. The one I posted above is on the passenger side. Yet another restored P4 I found on google is on the drivers side again. I found P4s with and without stainless trim. Did the Dodges come that way too? If so I have narrowed the search of your picture to MOPAR and 37 but I then wouldnt know if it was Plymouth or Dodge. Im still going with 37 Plymouth Convertible. Quote
james curl Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 Most radios were dealer installed, they put the antenna where it was the easiest for the mechanic. Quote
Dennis_MN Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 Most radios were dealer installed, they put the antenna where it was the easiest for the mechanic. When I was in high school, my after school job was working in a radio shop, (56-57) installing tv antennas and pick up and delivery. On occasion I installed car radios for dealers or for the individual owner. I would choose which type of antenna and where to mount it. Usually the radio was closer to the right side of the car or truck. I still own a punch block used to make the large hole in the fender. I didn't want to use on my pickup and make any extra holes.
