55 Fargo Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 (edited) Hi all, for those who may be interested I converted my oil bath breather to a paper disposable modern type today. My oil bath filter had been repaired a few times, but started leaking oil big time again lately. So I got fed-up, and converted it to modern disposable type. I purchased a NAPA 6184:o(Wix made), use the same as Normscoupe. I had to add a little seal inside where the filter sits, it seems to work well. Here are the pics... will not miss that oil mess, I hope it works well in the long run Edited May 2, 2011 by Rockwood Quote
Mark D Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Rockwood - I'm going to pick up a spare air cleaner and covert it for my car as well. Can you post a picture of the inside of the cap showing what you removed to make the filiter fit? I've seen others do this and am not sure what's been removed or how its been removed. There are no mechanical connections to release the inner part for the outer. Did you have to cut it out with a grinder? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. - mark Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 2, 2011 Author Report Posted May 2, 2011 (edited) Hi Mark, do not have pics of the stuffing I pulled out, it is gone to the garbage. If you have the same filter housing as what Norm'scoupe has, your good to go, mine being a Chrysler in Canada it was slightly different, although I Used the same filter element, had to use seal strip to create a good seal on the top and botton where the fliter sits in the canister. Here is the surgical procedure, 1) take top off filter housing, clean if need be, if oil is dripping all over. 2) cut out filter top on inside, where it joins from center to sides, use a cut off wheel, or hand held Dremel with small cut off wheels, suppose you could use tin snips if you had too. 3) remove all horse hair, and metal, clean out really good, and clean in solvent last, paint if necessary. 4) Filter housing bottom needs a thorough cleaning to remove all oil and dirt. 5) Install paper filter element, and re-install on engine, should be good to go. I will attach the thread to Norm Milliners pics, do you have the stock 48Plymouth filter housing? go this link to the engine restoration section on bottom of the page, and scroll down to view the oil bath breather conversion. http://www.indfloorcoating-repair.com/1948plymouthenginerestoration.html Edited May 2, 2011 by Rockwood Quote
Mark D Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 My filter looks just like yours and the one on Norms Website. I was hoping for a close up of the cut line to see where you did the suregery, but I suppose I can figure it out. As stated I've recently acquired a second filter so I can keep the original with the car undamanged. Appreciate the help. Will drop a note and follow up with photos when I get to doing mine. - Mark Quote

This is why I directed you to Nomrs website pics, if yours is just like Norms, then you can order the same filter, and cut out the horse hair and metal on the inside of the top lid. Could you post pics of yours tonight, I can then tell you exactly how to do yours.....Fred Quote
Mark D Posted June 16, 2011 Report Posted June 16, 2011 Got home early from a business trip today and decided it was time to grab a brew and some tin snips and tackle my air filter conversion. As mentioned prior I bought a second filter on ebay for $20- so I can maintain the original in stock condition. Photos of the operation attached. Tomorrow I'll run out at lunch with my measurements and size up a paper fiter. By the way for anyone that was following my issue about a month ago about the missing oil in my oil bath sump, I finally found out where it was all going... I took the bottom (sunp) off the carb today and it was HEAVY with oil. Turns out the bottom of the sump was filled with small pin holes. The oil leaked into the outer contain. So here's the results of my beer induced tin snipping. The first photo shows my original filter with the other taken apart. The other photos have a ruler in the shot so I know what my limits are when I go shopping. . Quote
