I'm going to be putting the Desoto away for the next 6 months or so. But during this time I will be doing some work to the rebuilt 228 I have sitting in the garage. One thing I noticed on the 228 was the lack of a harmonic balancer. I've searched through the archives and could find a definite answer to my question.

The toasted 251 that is in Ol' Fernando right now has a harmonic balancer on it and I would like to move it, and matching water pump and pulleys over to the 228. Will the 228 crank and front timing cover accept the 251 balancer? Or at least will the balancer mount on the 228 crank? I can move the timing cover over if I have to.

Brian, you might want to get 1 from a 228, there should be some around, will ask someone I know, if he has an extra laying around...

Thanks Fred, Let me know what you find. I'm going to make an attempt to use the parts I have here first. I can always have a little machining done to the balancer if necessary. If that does not work out then I might need one from a 228.

I used a harmonic balancer on my 1953 Desoto engine that came off my 48 P-15 engine. I believe most will interchange from various years and long and short block engines. Do a mock up to insure it fits.
