I am at the point in my restoration of a '51 B3C where I have removed, sand blasted and primed the box sections, running boards, hood, and with the help of several of you, the front clip and all its pieces.

Since I will not be able to paint anything until next spring/summer (if then), I would like to finish something up so I can look at over the winter and convince myself that I am making progress. The obvious thing is the job rated emblem.

I used the search function and have seen pictures of several emblems (Reg Evans, David Shaw, Dan Olson). Some are painted silver or aluminum with red in the Job Rated area and some with red in the vertical grooves as well. My emblem shows no sign of red in the grooves, but I think (know) I like that touch.

I would be interested in the experiences of others in this area (with photos if possible). What paint have you used? Dull or gloss finish? I assume rattle can but I'm not sure.

I also assume that the red is hand painted. Any particular red?

A question for Reg - what paint did you use to give your gloss finish? I think it looks great.

As in previous threads, I appreciate any advice you can provide

In '51 the "job rated" section was a cast aluminum piece that was chromed. Because of the Korean war effort, chrome was restricted and before the '52 models came out the "job rated" section became a stamped steel piece that was painted an argent (silver) color. In '53 the vertical grooves were pinstriped with a red color, before that it should just be the "job rated" lettering.

Probably sounds like I'm selling these things, but that B-series trucks reference guide has all of this info. Pretty interesting reading, I guess I'm a bit of a history geek. :o

Barry,

I used "One Shot" sign painters enamel with a small paint brush. The color is Fire Red.

This one is from a very late production 1951. It is cast aluminum and was originally not chromed but painted. I repainted it using enamel tractor paint. The colors are Silver and MF Red. I got a very small paint brush from a hobby store to do the lettering. I passed on the 99 cent chinese brush a bought a nice $5 one.

Thank you guys for your responses. To Moparmonkey: I should have checked the Bunn book before I started the thread. I read the book several months when I received the new reprint, and actually high lighted the facts that you mentioned. However, I forgot all that when I started the thread.

To Reg: Thank you for your response. I ordered the "One Shot" enamel from Eastwood. I wish my emblem was chrome (as yours apparently is), but it isn't.

To Old Dodge: Thank you for your photos, they look great. I am hopeful that my emblem looks as good when I am finished.

Thanks again. I will post a photo when I complete mine. I think that I will display is prominently in my shop during the winter as encouragement to keep plugging on my project.

Yes Barry.

Mine is an original chrome plated heavy pot metal one from 51. I used it on my 52 even though in 52 they switched to stamped steel. Hey,you could send yours out to a plater.

PS....I've never seen an aluminum one.

Well Reg its been a while since I re-did it. I suppose it might be a pot metal casting. I do remember it was soft as I removed a few flaws with the glass beads when I was blasting the layers of paint off. Maybe glass beaded pot metal looks like aluminum?

It was definitely not chromed. It had the original black colored primer visible on the backside. The front had the original silver on top of the primer and fire truck red sprayed over top of that. I'm very happy with the way it turned out.

Whatever metal yours is made of Kevin you sure did a nice job restoring it.

I guess if you were into "Trivial Pursuit" you could test it with a magnet. Mine is barely ferrous just like the hood ornament. The other bright work such as door handles, wiper arms, and dodge emblem are much more ferrous.

In order to finish off this thread while I am thinking of it, I have attached a photo of my completed Job-Rated emblem. At least now, something is FINALLY finished on my truck. A small victory. Thanks to all you who joined this thread.
