i have the side of my engine all cleared as i am replacing the manifold gaskets and doing the valves in # 3 cylinder. while it is all open i want to pull the oil pump as it leaks quite a bit. there are two areas where it coul leak. where the pump meets the block and a cap on the top of the pump. i want to replace both gaskets. i have not found any real good maintenence procrdures that cover this. anybody have any tips? is this job easy or does it require some special info or toools? thanks for any help. i have a 265 cid in a 1954 windsor. capt den

In the maintenance manual they tell you to line up the slot in the pump shaft a certain way so that when you install the pump it will line up with the distributor slot when the engine is at top dead center.

The oil pump shaft end has a slot in it where the distributor shaft fits. The manual says that when the distributor is firing on number one cylinder, the rotor will be at about a 7:00 position. Clocking refers to positioning of something. In your case, if the oil pump, meaning the rotational position of the shaft, is in the correct position, then the distributor will fit as described above. To make things easy, do not remove the oil pump until the engine is at TDC and firing on number one cylinder. Remove distributor and note the position of the oil pump slot. Install the pump so that the slot is in same position as it was when removed.
