Joe,

When I came by on Sunday you showed me what appears to be tiny metal slivers in your oil pan. Thinking about that, you might want to disassemble your oil pick up and flush it out real well. I found tiny metal fragments in the pick up after my motor "went south." Apparently they were small enough to get past the filter screen.

I see some rust on the flywheel, if it's essentially smooth, I think some

fairly fine sandpaper will clean it up. At least, that's what some

mechanic type person told me once.

Hang in there and good luck.

Jim,

I plan to clean out the pickup. I haven't gotten to it yet but there is what appears to be a large amount of something that looks like pieces of steel wool. I will need something like a piece of welding stick or something similar to reach it and haven't done it yet.

Bob, the flywheel does have some rust on it but it is smooth. There is no place you can put anything here where it won't rust.

In any event, I'm going to give this engine a major cleaning if it can be saved.

Last night I cleaned out the pickup and got a bit of foreign material out of it. Most of it was lint of some kind. Strange, but that's what it was. My guess is it was left behind by whatever cloth I used to clean the thing out with. You may remember I had to take the oil pan off a couple of times and reinstall it. That would account for the bits of hardened Permatex gasket material. Then there are the metal slivers. I spread all this debris across a paper towel and then ran a magnet across it. Most of it pulled right up to the magnet. As Jim Yergin pointed out, I have quite a bit of metal flakes in my oil pan. Won't have a verdict until next week.
