55 Fargo Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 Hi all, bought a 73 bug today from someone we know, it needs a bit to be roadworthy, but is running well at least. The one problem it has it won't go into gear when running, sounds like a clutch or release bearing problem, it was used as a daily dirver until 4 years ago. Right now it's under a mountain of snow. The one thing is, there are plenty of parts available for these cars, they are reasonably priced and we have a good soure for these items in Vancouver Canada. I ahve alwasy liked these cars, delivered pizza in them in my youth, they had propane ovens in the back to keep the pizza warm.Is anybody on this forum into these cars, if so drop me a line and let me know what you know................Rockopulco Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 Fred, You are correct in that parts are readily available. I believe up until 1999 or 98 the old Beetle as we know it was still manufactured in Mexico utilizing the production tools and patterns sold when manufacturing was discontinued here in the lower 48. I was in Mexico City about a year ago and thought I was having a flashback from 1968. Chet… Quote
D25_Steve Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I know of a VW auto yard out in BC that has good service, moderately good prices. I think it was called Bow-Wow, but I could be wrong. Quote
Guest jtw3749c Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Yep, had a few of them VW's myself. My first was when I was stationed in Alaska in 1967. Drove that 59 home from there to Indiana. What an interesting trip that was. Have a 1958 now, that we've decided to sell. Nice little car too. Oh well, got to make room and I ain't getting any younger. JT Quote
Brendan D25 Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Congratulations Fred, on your purchase. I also have a 73 VW Bug. Is yours a standard (almost flat windshield) or a Superbeetle ( round windshield)? I spent three winters restoring mine. I bought it twelve years ago for $400 from a lady who used it as a doghouse for her Alaskan Malamute, she decided to sell when her dog used to get through the floor and dig his way out. Needless to say it was rough. It is now appraised at $14k. Also the clutch might be stuck to the flywheel from sitting so long. Good Luck, Brendan. Quote
