tysouthwick Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 My grandpa at his farm has lots of engines siting in a field one of them has caught my eye it is a 265 out of a 53 chrysler, I would like to know if there is more parts for one than a 230/218 and how much more horsepower is gained and if anyone has swaped one in to 49 Dodge B1B Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 The 53 Chrysler 265 was rated at 119 HP and the 49 Truck 218 was rated at 95 HP. I installed a 251 in my 52 1/2 ton which is also the 2" longer engine like the 265. Fairly simple job. Quote
FargoPanel Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 I am just finishing a 265 and found parts readily available. Everything is new except the block, crank and rods, and the cam which I had reground. Have Fun! Quote
tysouthwick Posted June 18, 2010 Author Report Posted June 18, 2010 Is there enough clearance for the radiator or would that have to be moved closer to the grill Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Is there enough clearance for the radiator or would that have to be moved closer to the grill This is the third truck I have installed a 251 in. The first 2 I had to mount the radiator forward of where it was originally. The last one,my 52 1/2 ton, I had to actually move the radiator toward the engine. It's been about 12 years now so I don't know where I got the radiator but maybe it was from a larger 1.5 ton. You can see in the photo that I had to use longer bolts with a 1/2" copper tubing coupler. I also had to grind off a little of the cross member rear lip to clear the oil pan sump. The other photo shows the DCPD part number 1393353. Can anyone id the radiator from this number ? 1393353 I also added some metal tabs to the front motor mount that reached back to the original mounting holes. Quote
tysouthwick Posted June 19, 2010 Author Report Posted June 19, 2010 Question if my original radiator is trash and i got one out of a 55 willys pickup that is smaller would my engine over heat? and where i live the summer time temperture can easily get up to 120 degrees? Quote
wayfarer Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 Since the original actually fits in the space provided you will be ahead to have a larger core installed. Quote
