claybill Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 (edited) water pours into the engine and #$%$^&&*^% the crankcase is gray and bubbly. what a mess.! i took the carbs and ex manifold off. i took off all electrics, plugs and coil etc i emptied all engine and radiator water disconnected temp gage thing i drained oil tank i removed the valve adj covers, cleaned in there with a rag I took off the head i squirted everything with lube. it turns over rapidly, nice! there appears to be NO damage anywhere. question;......how do i 'clean up' the main bearings? fill with kerosene and swish!...or fill with ATF and swish? or fill with new oil and crank away..? right now i am looking intently at my motor, nursing my second smooth alcoholic cocktail!! advice. bill Edited August 25, 2009 by claybill Quote
Andydodge Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 Bill, if you have dropped the sump and cleaned it out, also cleaned the crap off other internal parts, retorque the head and turn it over with new oil in, strat it and run till it gets to operating temp, maybe 20mins, recheck the oil which should be good to look at, then turn off and drop that oil out and put nice new oil in again and it should be o/k............whatever oil filter you have will need to be cleaned out also.........andyd Quote
Tom Skinner Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 Dear Claybill, If water pours into the engine as you say, then it sounds to me like you have a leaky Head Gasket. I wouldn't waste any more than 1 Oil Change to determine this without pulling the head. Try a Compression Test First. Low Readings - say 35-75 psi/Cylinder will tell the Tale. water in the Oil indicates a leaky Head Gasket. Good Readings say 80-100 psi per Cylinder will indicate a healthy Head gasket, and Compression enough to start her. An Engine needs good Compression, Spark and Fuel to start. A cheap quick check of Compression will tell the Story up front without wasting money on Oil, Etc. Head gaskets are @ $35. Tom Quote
claybill Posted August 25, 2009 Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 i'll check the head for flatness. i will empty and clean out the oil filter, and drain the oil pan AGAIN. i'll run 3 qts of new oil thru...i can turn it over easily with battery... question....must i take the pan off and clean it..? bill Quote
james curl Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 This is what drives people to put modern V8 engines in old cars, something about the point of diminishing returns with these old engines. Sometimes they don't nichol and dime you to death but a hundred here and a hundred there soon add up to a lot of money for a 100 horsepower engine that leaks water everywhere. Quote
Andydodge Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Bill, do you know what caused the head gasket blow in the 1st place?......you mentioned in your 1st post that you have the head off.......others have mentioned getting it trued,ie, check that its dead flat, not warped, have it skimmed/machined if it needs it........you mention "I drained oil tank" .......is this the sump on the bottom of the engine block or the oil filter canister thats bolted to the side of the engine above the starter motor.........if you have cleaned out the filter, thats fine, if you have dropped the sump and cleaned that out, thats fine, tho' if you have just drained the sump then thats ok too, basically you should clean as much as you can, get the head flat, re torque it and fill oil and turn the engine over without plugs, then check oil is o/k, start, then what I have explained...........andyd Quote
claybill Posted August 25, 2009 Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 andy, getting oil today. i am not using a remote oil filter for this test engine...i did have very good oil pressure..50 lb. i drained oil from crankcase pan but did not take it off. today i'll fill it with fresh oil and batt.pump the motor several times..to clean it out some before i drain it again and refill with fresh oil and put it back together and get it running. it is a test engine on a low rolling stand. i have to raise it to get to the drain plug. looks ok. thanks for all the input...the forum really provides a FINE checklist on all the precedures that we 'amatuers' encounter.. and that I am. but i love to clink about these motors and usually i get it fixed right. not always. bill Quote
