hkestes41 Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 I am donating the one good axle, backing plate and drum from my old rear end to Bob for the coupe resurection when I go to the HAMB Drags this weekend. Have managed to get the Drum and Backing Plate off with no problem now what steps are involved in getting the axle out of the housing? Don't want to mess anything up bumbling around trying to figure it out on my own and the manual was not much help. Quote
Troganin Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 A slide hammer worked well for me when I did it last month to replace a bad bearing. Quote
RobertKB Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 I leave the big washer and nut on the end of the axle done up as far as possible to protect the threads. I then take an old flywheel and put it up to the axle housing and slide it down to the washer and nut. A couple of good thumps will usually pop the axle out. Does the same basic thing as the slide hammer. Quote
hkestes41 Posted August 19, 2009 Author Report Posted August 19, 2009 Thanks guys, I used a slide hammer to pull it out. I thought that was the proper way but wanted to make sure before I started whacking on it. Anyway, the axle and brake parts are now wrapped an in my trunk for the journey to Joplin. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 Wow...thanks in advance Kirk. I have your number plugged into my cell phone now. Come to think of it, I invented my own weird gadget for pulling the axie....with a big nut, some threaded rod and a joiner to attach to the thread on the axle. Or something about like that. Put a pipe wrench onto the puller, then whacked on it. Fairly cheap - a guy at the muffler shop welded the nut on to the joiner. Hmmm - now, what kind of beer do you like best?? Quote
