Rumble1960 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 (edited) I set up the crank and cam timing marks as indicated in the service manual, the crank gear's mark at 10 o'clock and the cam gears mark at 4 o'clock. No problem as far as I know but I would have thought this would put #1 piston at the top of the compression stroke but it is actually #6 that is at the top of the compression stroke, #1 is actually on the compression stroke when the crank gear mark is again at 4 o'clock and the cam gear mark is at 10 o'clock. Am I understanding this correctly, I think the cam gear can only install on the cam one way so I think I'm good but I want to make sure. Edited July 13, 2009 by Rumble1960 Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 My service manual says the same thing, so, I would go for it. Quote
moose Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 That's the same as the cam I just put in too. I thought it was a bit weird, but turning it through it seemed right. The valve overlap was at TDC as well, so that's the way it's supposed to be. Quote
Rumble1960 Posted July 13, 2009 Author Report Posted July 13, 2009 another thing I'm pretty sure I have right but would like confirmed is when the oil pump is installed the slot in the end of the shaft should be in line with the motor from front to back. I played with this for quite a while and this places the distributor when installed with the rotor pointing precisely to #1 spark plug wire. How does this sound to you guys? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 I don't think it really matters which tower it points to as long as you know it and connect the wires to the correct plugs. But, yes, put the pump shaft slot horizontal and the rotor should point about 7 O'clock which is the tower for cylinder number 1. That way it will be clear to anyone that works on it. Quote
