1940plymouth Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Are the cluster gears interchangeable from a 1939 floor shift Plymouth tranny to a 1940 Plymouth column shift tranny? Quote
Jim Yergin Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 By "cluster gear" do you mean the countershaft gear assembly? If so, the part numbers are different for those years. 1936-1939 used 661302, 1940 used 853885, and 1941-1948 used 697823. That does not mean that they won't interchange. I have installed a "fast second" gear and countershaft assembly from a 1940 Plymouth in my 1953 O/D transmission. The 1939 countershaft assembly may go into the 1940 transmission but you may also have to install the 1939 second gear. Sorry I can't be of more help. Jim Yergin Quote
desoto1939 Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 As per the other responce the 37-39 cg is part number 661302 40 part # 853885 41-52 part# 697823 These fit all the mopar cars from the years listed. I do see alot of the 40 CG on ebay every so often. I would go with the 1940 specific CG. This is just my opinion. Rich desoto1939@aol.com Quote
David Strieb Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 according to my mopar streamliner catalog for the "countershaft gear assembly": #661 302 fits '35 thru '39 plymouth, dodge, chrysler, and '36 thru '39 desoto #853 885 fits 1940 plymouth, dodge, chrysler, and desoto #697 823 fits '41 thru '47 plymouth, dodge. chrysler and desoto '41 thru '42 uses 2 different part #'s depending on if the car has a std. 3 speed or an overdrive chrysler and desoto '46 and '47 uses #1112 457 This catalog was published in '47 The transmission assembly should interchange from '40 thru about '54. Too bad your're so far away, I have 3 or 4 std 3 speeds that will fit your car that need a new home. Had them for my P10 before I put the GM running gear in. Quote
1940plymouth Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 I want to take time to thank everyone for their help. I had a good question asked me yesterday that I wasn't able to answer. Am I sure the tranny is a 1940? I know the engine is a P-11, but just figured the tranny was original to the car. It is raining here today, with rain mentioned on and off all weekend. I'll crawl under the car when it dries up, so I can look for some casing numbers on the tranny case. Thanks again, Bob Quote
