wayfarerstranger Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 ALL of a sudden i seem to have a starting problem with my 49 PLY. WOODIE ..went out this morning to start it up and it acted like the battery was very weak,,and would not start ,but the battery is new & fully charged,,, i changed out the coil didn`t help, even changed the battery but when i put the cable from the solenoid to the battery the starter started turning and the key was off so i removed the cable ?? would this be the solenoid or something in the starter ? i let the car sit all day then hooked up the cables again with no problem and the damn thing started on the first turn of the key , i turned it off & on several times and it fired right up .. has this ever happen to anyone else ?? THANX CHANCE Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 You now have a better ground at the starter. These old cars have got to have a good ground. The cables you are using are they the right thickness? I was having a heck of a time with my starter until I had it rebuilt. if I loosened the starter it would turn like crazy. If I tighten it to the block like it's supposed to be it would slowly turn. It was grounding out inside the starter:) Pull it and have it checked summer time is almost here:D good luck Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 YEA the cables and everything else is correct ....thanx for the advice ,, Quote
blueskies Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 I had something like this happen once in my '50. Just after I got it back on the road, I took my kids to school in the car. Parked the car, took the kids inside, and when I came back out, nothing when I turned the key. Just like the battery had suddenly died. I fiddled with everything for a while in the parking lot, to no avail. I had to push start the car (in the kids eyes, the car went from cool to lame, just like that...). It fired right up with the kickstart, and has worked fine ever since. No idea why it wouldn't start. Maybe you'll get lucky and the woody will forget it had a problem. Pete Quote
Phil Martin Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Had a truck that did the same thing. Found it had a bent shaft in starter. Once in a while if it stopped in right spot it would lockup. Jumping would give it enuogh oomph to turn over. Quote
