woodscavenger Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 So close to getting this on the road I can smell it. Check out my blog to see my progress. It includes installation of the bed, connection of the e-brake keeping the original handle but connection to a Jeep Cherokee axle. I slapped on the rear fender (need to buy a few more bolts), and then I need to wire my rear lights and look for a bumper. I need a lot of interior work but that can wait. I want to drive this thing!!! http://50dodge.blogspot.com Quote
buds truck Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 very nice, somehow, I can smell it too!!! Quote
grey beard Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Shane, Project looks very nice. Good luck on getting it on the road. I'm curious why you went to the work of replacing both the rear axle unit AND the tranny. Usually either one of these will give a happier engine speed for highway driving. Will not the higher ratio Jeep rear be too high a cog with your O.D. tranny? Just curious. Keep us posted on your progress. Thanks Mebby you will just not use O.D., what? Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I'm curious why you went to the work of replacing both the rear axle unit AND the tranny. Usually either one of these will give a happier engine speed for highway driving. I suspect Shane replaced both for the same reason I did. A T-5 does not have a driveshaft mounted emergency brake. As far as differential ratios I am running a 3.55/1. I can easily run 70 MPH and my engine is only spinning 2200 RPM's. I have ample torque to pull all but the steepest of hills with this combination. Quote
Bob_Koch Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I've been looking at how to setup my ebrake. I think you gave me the answer. Great progress on your truck. It'll be ready to drive for spring. Quote
woodscavenger Posted March 16, 2009 Author Report Posted March 16, 2009 Since I wanted a tranny with OD and no double clutch shifting I went with the T5. If you do that you now have no E-brake. Also after listening to everyone and their adventures with servicing the rear drum I decided that I could get rear brakes with easy parts availability, higher axle ratio, and e-brake mechanisms built into the drums and keep the original wheel bolt pattern.
