claybill Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 in 1957-8 i was working the parking lots in atlantic city and after work about 1 am we would go across town to the blues clubs and hang out for a few hours til closing.... one night as the band was on a break..so I ducked into a crowded hamburger joint, and a bunch of black guys slid over and shared their booth with me. they were funnin' and talking, a bit older than I was. I was more interested in a hamburger! they started writing stuff on napkins and passing it around laughing etc..talking about bossman and who is bossman etc etc....and writing more stuff ..i thought it was all nonsense....... i walked across the street to enjoy the blues...and my hamburger fiends climbed up on the stage,!!!!! wow! one actually waved at me, and opened the set with a new song!!! HEY BOSSMAN.! i was thrilled.. bill, there is more to the story..another time.. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 So.....they were writing a song on their break during the gig. Cool. They say Bobby Troup wrote "Route 66" on a napkin. I once met, by accident, during a concert, Johnnie Johnson, the piano player who initially hired Chuck Berry as his guitarist....in 1953. He then ended up being Chuck's piano player for many years. In later years, he became a star in his own right and was invited to play with many well known blues and rock groups. Quote
randroid Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Bill, I've heard it said that Merle Haggard wrote "Okie from Muscogie" between sets of a concert he was bombing, and while I like a lot of Merle's songs (the aforementioned song not particularly being one of them), what a thrill it must have been to meet Bo Diddly! That is a memory you obviously cherish. -Randy Quote
claybill Posted February 12, 2009 Author Report Posted February 12, 2009 OK, here is the rest of the story. you wont believe it!! during the blues session Bo literally brought the house down!! a few guys from .wVa univ. started that dance where you parade around holding on to hips like a ..conga line!!..and it had 50-60 people at least, and we paraded in and out of the bar, all around in and out of restrooms..! and when we paraded out of the ladies restroom the leader had a (loose) toilet seat around his neck , like a horse collar!!!! Bo diddley went crazy,! laughing, and played louder and stronger. the band was hysterical.!!! (it wasnt me , but i was 2nd in line) 10 years later...yes 10! i was at a bo diddley blues concert in Pa. at my old univ and stood in the crowd close to the stage watching the band play...bo looked at me and smiled..normal i thought.. after the song ended he looked at me again and with a wave of his hand around his neck, horseshoe fashion, he pointed at me!! i shook my head , yes!! ............ he played another song..and the night went on and on.... bill .......................it's been a long time since i told that story..memories.. BobT-47P15 Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 I enjoy music and things related. A local club called "The Kitchen Pass" used to bring in touring blues musicians who are big names in the field. The bad part was that they would bring them in on a week night as they were passing thru the area to a larger venue. The reason they did that is - the group will play for a lower fee in that situation. Therefore, most of those weeknight shows were not as well attended as a weekend show. If the guy was a harmonica player, I went regardless of what night. So, 4 or 5 years ago Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers were here....they had actually been here several times before. After the show, I asked Rod (the singer, harp player) and his wife Honey (the keyboard player) if they would like to see our 47 Plymouth convert. Rod is also an old car guy, who resides in California. He keeps about 4 old cars from the 50s or 60s in his collection. Said he had a 47 Plymouth woody wagon several years back. So, we went out front to the car......and they looked it over, then posed for this picture. (date on pic is not correct) He always wears those sunglasses.............. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Hounddog-- This rejuvenated old filling station is on the North end of Main Street in Galena, KS, by where you hit Old RT 66 going back toward Joplin. Now operated by some women as a tourist stop. The old International truck is the one the movie people claim was their inspiration for "Mater" in the movie CARS. It was found somewhere in the Galena area originally. As you probably know, The Golden Rule Store is now long gone. Now, that was an interesting place. Quote
Hounddog Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Yea I remember going to the golden rule and I think they had the same clothes from when they opened.. after the woman that owned it passed on they closed it down.. of course the only bar galena had fell in a mine shaft couple years ago so I dont know where all the regs go now.
