Lee Exline Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Ran across this and wish I could afford it but I need to concentrate on getting my 1956 Desoto UTE restored so I won't be buying it! The ebay OZ auction This may be the only one left? and it looks like they used the same body as the used on the Plymouth (note the single piece windshield) I would guess the body is by TJ Richards? Of course these were only made in Australia! Quote
Lee Exline Posted December 7, 2008 Author Report Posted December 7, 2008 here is the 40 Plymouth brochure showing the deluxe cab with quarter windows (Army would have gotten the standard cab) but the image shows a split windshield? and the 39 used a split window? Quote
Andydodge Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 That 41 DeSoto is not that uncommon, I know of one an hours drive from me here in Nth New South Wales, the pic of the 40 Plymouth Ute tho' is RARE, I have only ever seen one 1940 Mopar Ute in nearly 40 yrs of playing with cars, my 1st car was a 1940 Australian Dodge Coupe, which used the same basic roof as the ute pictured, the ute & coupe used a 4dr sedan front door with a short "coupe" roof, which was actually made by cutting the rear of the sedan roof and rear quarters away, the Ute/Coupe door pillar still had the rear suicide door jam which was covered up by the newly rolled/stamped rear quarters .....the picture of the 39 Plymouth Ute shows the unique to OZ 3 window coupe style roof that BOTH the 39 Oz Dodge & Plymouth Coupes and Utes both used........both the 39 Ute & Coupe are fairly common..........andyd Quote
Lee Exline Posted December 7, 2008 Author Report Posted December 7, 2008 All UTEs are very uncommon over here in the states! I would love to get more pictures of the other Desoto UTE if you ever drive by it again? If you look behind the 39 Plymouth there is a 39 coupe with the same three window body style. I would love to have a 39 also since the three window coupe style roof is shaped like the top of a bubble it just stands out! Quote
Andydodge Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Lee.........where did that pic of the 40 Plymouth Ute come from?.......I have both an Oz 40 Plymouth & Dodge sales brochure and neither show the Ute, only the Oz sedans and coupe are shown......and yep, they are TJ Richards bodies.......thanks, andyd Quote

Tony WestOZ Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Recieved it, thank`s Lee. Like you Lee I would not mind that Desoto in my shed it`s the only one I have seen. Quote
Andydodge Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Tony, whilst they are not on every corner I have seen maybe half a dozen of those 41 Utes, all I think have been DeSotos , also they have a separate windscreen frame that pivots from the top, like 30's Fords, note the top mounted wipers to accomodate this feature, there is one about an hrs drive from me, rather sad condition tho, makes the one pictured look like showroom condition........lol........all the ones I've seen have had the hole in the roof where a machine gun/observer would have been......andyd Quote

I have seen a quite a few trucks over here but 30`s and early 40`s car based utes I`ve found pretty thin on the ground. Maybe 3 over 25 years. I am told that there is more old Mopar stuff turning up to the car shows around town but I just don`t get to the shows like I use to years ago. Quote
Lee Exline Posted December 8, 2008 Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 I just got an email from the guy. I asked if the tailgate was in place, and he says it is! He also said the wood in the back is rotted out. He also mentioned that the grille is different? Is that a Diplomat grille? I am not that familiar with the 41 grille but it looked like a standard 41 grille to me? Quote
