BobT-47P15 Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 Over on the HAMB, one fellow said he had two Fram oil filters that self destructed in a short period of time, causing him engine problems. Then several others chimed in with negative opinions on Fram. At the same time, some said they'd had no problems. I would attach a link to that thread, but the HAMB site is blocked on our work computer system. I can't say that I've had any problems with the Fram filters I've used, but based on those comments think I'll change to a different brand next time. Just tossing this out for what it may be worth........someone can go find the HAMB link if you want to see their comments. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 Bob, I've had a Purolator oil filter self destruct on me about 2 years ago. Blew at the seam while I was on the freeway about 10:30 PM on Easter Sunday while on my way home from my brother in laws house. He only lives about 10 miles from me and I was about halfway home at the time it blew. Naturally, just about everything is closed on Easter Sunday, especially that late. Was lucky because there was a grocery store at the next exit that was open 24/7. Picked up 5 quarts of oil, dumped it into the engine at the parking lot, then continued home. That was enough to get me home without causing any damage. Of course I didn't know it was the filter because it was too dark to see. So.........you probably can get bad filters in any brand. Fram probably just had a bad lot like Purolator evidently did. Quote
oldmopar Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 I have heard complaints about fram filters but I use them and have not had a problem with them or any other filters. But with all this stuff being made overseas I would expect problems with most any product produced by someone making 10 cents a hour. Ed Quote
JerseyHarold Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 Somebody did a study of oil filters a few years ago (I think the link is somewhere on the allpar site) and the conclusion was that Fram oil filters aren't made all that well. If you go to a parts store (or even Wal-Mart) and compare a Fram air filter to a 'better' brand, you'll see wider pleats which means less filter area. I personally don't use Fram products.
