How do I know if I killed my starter?

Any motor oil will work. If you find rust you'll have to clean that up first, of course. Don't worry about too much oil, its at the wrong end to get to the brushes, and the rear bearing might like a little anyway.

Turns out my mechanical connector copper tag thingy was the worn contact- only for 42 and earlier though..
