Normspeed Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Once again, after a few months one of my manifold to header pipe flange gaskets has started leaking a little. This time I want to insert some short straight lengths of exhaust pipe inside before reassembly. Anyone here tried that, and any tips you can share? Quote

james curl Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 All chevy I 6 engines have a short peice of tubing in the pipe to center the donut before clamping, that said all of the MoPar I 6 manifolds that I have removed the header pipe extended up into the manifold about 3/4" beyond the welded flange. Normspeed Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 Yeah, what James said. I think I might tackle this today. Quote
Normspeed Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 LOL Shel! I think they're high but not highly recommended! Quote
Normspeed Posted September 11, 2008 Author Report Posted September 11, 2008 Well I repaired it and it came out pretty good. It was only the rear pipe that blew the gasket. But both gaskets have to be replaced when you take it loose. I dropped the header pipes, 10 minute job, real easy with the car jacked up, the tire off and the inner fender panel already removed for general ventilation. Measured the inner diameter of the manifold hole and the header pipe, and they are different, A hair under 2" in the manifold, 1 13/16" for the header pipe. Armed with my calipers, off to Kragen to measure some exhaust adaptors. Got one slightly less than the needed sizes, used my trusty old tailpipe expander to stretch it to a snug fit, cleaned it up with the Dremel, cut it off at a total length of maybe 1 1/2", tapped it into place in the manifold (yup there is a recess up in the casting for a pipe to seat up there). Used some fresh gaskets, coated everything with my new best friend, Permatex red high temp RTV silicone, did what the instructions said. It's curing for 24 hours before I fire it up. I just know this will work.... While I had it up on the jackstands I repacked the front wheel bearings, lubed all 20+ zircs, checked the trans and diff and did the after break-in adjustment on my new 11" Dodge brakes. All is well, the P24 says "Cisco, point me at New Mexico and let's went! Quote
