BobT-47P15 Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Wash the shoes, put them in the clothes dryer to shrink them. But seriously though, they may need to be sanded down. I think some others can address this question. Are the adjusters backed off all the way? Quote
blueskies Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 If I remember right, some of the replacement brake kits come with the wrong length push rods that go between the cylinder and the brake shoe. You might compare them with the originals if you have changed them out. Are you using the AMMCO tool? I would highly recommend it, it measures the drum, and transfers this diameter to the shoes. There is a minor and major adjustment, and both need to be adjusted correctly to get the entire surface of the new shoes to contact the drum surface. It's my opinion, and others here will agree, that you cannot correctly adjust these brakes without the tool, or at least a home made version of the tool. All you can feel with the "by feel" method, is contact with the shoe and drum. There is no way to tell if the shoes are centered and aligned with the drum by feel. The minor adjustment affects the major adjustment, and vice versa, so it takes a few rounds of adjusting each to get the shoes just right. Still having issues with my web host, so hit reload on your browser if the ammco instruction images do no show... Pete Quote
Frank Blackstone Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 using the bleeder valve. I have had the cylinders sort of stick open when the brake is applied with the wheel off. I kno it is not supposed to happen and the spring is supposed to return the cylinders. I think they get out too far not having the drum in place and can't return. good luck. Quote
hucks 50 Posted August 28, 2008 Author Report Posted August 28, 2008 no ammco tool ,so i might be screwed, anybody have a pic of the piece that touches the brake shoe and cyl. i have 2 styles the part that goes in the cyl? Quote
laynrubber Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 The tool is the ultimate but if ya don't have it.....make sure your adjusters are rotated to the min diameter of the shoes. I had to put 2 shoes on a belt sander , made me cringe but it was the only way the drum would go on. Quote
hucks 50 Posted August 28, 2008 Author Report Posted August 28, 2008 well i found the adjusters on the back side of the backing plate ,turned them in and yahoo ,the drum went on . i guess ill try to make a tool to do the major adjustment . thanks guys . Quote
