I got my new "Older Yeller" up on the rack today to drain the oil and bleed and adjust the brakes and discovered the rt. rear brake drum was sorta loose on the axle. I guess a previous owner drove the truck for quite a while with a loose axle nut and this widened out the key way on the drum about 1/64" ( sorry...carpenter here ) The key way on the axle is a little widened too but only about 1/2 as much as the drum. The key stock itself is all chewed up and broken in half as well. Damn, I wanted to go for a test drive. :(

Anybody have a good brake drum and key they want to sell?

49 1/2 ton w/right hand bolts.

I have a pair of them but they are still on the axle and it's in storage. I'll try and get it out and pull the drums sometime next week. I'll let you know what there condition is.

Know anyone that does machine shop work? If all else failed, and probably a pretty quick fix, you could just have the axel and hub keyways each machined out just a little to be made to square up better, and be the same size, and use a slightly bigger key stock. I wonder if that angle/taper in the axel keyway the way it is might cause slop in a new hub and key, and cause it to wear out again. Joel

Thanks Tom. Let me know what you find when you get a chance. For now I kind of filled the voids with coat hanger and some bailing wire so I can drive it for a little bit.

Joel, I'm sure you are right. I'll look in to that at the local machine shop.

Reg,

I'm gonna try to get that drum off tomorrow to check the condition. Sorry for the delay.

I'll get both drums off and get some good pic's for you now that the parts are out of storage. What's the minimum thickness for these drums? I'll get them measured.

Again sorry for the delay.

Tom
