  1. Yes I used an alignment tool. I did not test fit but I verified shaft length and diameter of shaft and pilot bushing and seemed ok. I bumped the engine with Trans in gear and Trans was rotating.
  2. Well guys 2 years later I am back on my objective to reassemble the 49 (not 50 as mentioned above) that was given to me in parts and pieces. I have all exterior body parts installed with the exception of the rear bumper. The motor is installed and attempting to install the transmission which I had posted questions 2 years ago which now brings me to this posting. I have made several attempts to line up and install transmission with no success. It's needs to go in another 1-1/4" +- to mate up to the bell housing. I did find the bell housing and flywheel that came off the D-24. I used (2) long bolts with head cut off installed diagonally from each other to help align. A new pilot bearing was installed. The wagon is on my driveway which makes more difficult. Any feed back would be great! Thanks
  3. Hi- I am reassembling a 1949 Plymouth Suburban that was given to me in parts. It's a project and my goal was to assembly it into a complete wagon.

I see you have a couple of woodies. I always wanted to end up with one. I am an old surfer from So Cal and it's a perfect fit for me.

I hope to purchase one this year and sell my 49 Sub and my 56 Merc wagon.

If you know of any for sale or will be for sale this year let me know.

    thanks

I have a 49 Dodge Woodie only 900 made and only a handful exist today . needs restoring or could be left in original  patina condition with just mechanical rebuilds and and needed wood repairs , in other words just needed repairs to be driven , which is what my 49 Plymouth is & i love it and what i will do to the Dodge  if i keep it .  i want 30,000 as is  if it was a driver like i described it would be double that easy and like new restored around 100.000 .....  i also have a 51 Chevy Tin Woodie  with lots of new parts needs finishing these rolling down the road kinda nice are around 25 to 30,000  super nice 40 to 60.000 and up . i would want 18.000 .....

  4. Young Ed - I sure set myself up for that one! Thanks for the humor?
  5. This tag came off a 49 - 50 Suburban. It looks like original stamping. Has anyone ran across something like this?
  6. Anyone know where to get this gasket?
  7. Yes it does! Thanks
  8. Thanks. How about the Bell Housing?
  9. I cannot seem to find the torque values for the bell housing to engine and manifolds for a Dodge 230. Thanks for your help.
  10. Thanks for the information. If the compression test is satisfactory I will remove water pump to look at the water distribution pipe. Trying to get it to a point for the best shot for a successful start up!
  11. Poured about 2/3 of a bottle equally in each cylinder. Hard to tell how much dripped out but I would say no where near the 2/3 poured in.
  12. So nothing to really worry about for the moment!!
  13. Working on bringing my D24 motor to a point where I can perform a compression test to evaluate its condition. It's on a wooden support frame on a dolly. I poured some Marvel Mystery oil into the pistons and after a few days was able to easily turn it over. After a while I noticed Marvel Mystery oil dripping from the exhaust manifold cut off tail pipe. What is this telling me ? Thanks
  14. Update- I followed the suggestion made by DJ194950 and had a Vin verifier come out and confirm engine number on the frame. I also retained his services to see if he could get a title, registration and plates. The good news is that he was successful with Ca. DMV and I will be receiving plates and registration in just 4 days! From the time he came out to verify number to when I will get documents will be 1 week! I now can proceed with confidence that this 49 Suburban will see the road once again. Thanks for all the comments and advise!
  15. Does my engine number that I found on the frame look right? I had to really dig deep to expose the numbers. I am wondering if the U should be a 0 or did they use number and letters. Thanks
  16. Greg- no paperwork. The seller purchased the vehicle as a doner car for his other project. I did get the seller to sign a DMV form that transfer ownership.
  17. Marty - appreciate your response. The body number that I have is 717 8233. Did you register your car recently? What was your first step in doing so? Thanks
  18. I acquired a 49 Suburban in April of this year with the understanding that it had no title and no serial number but I loved the wagon anyway. With success I started acquiring and assembling the body parts to make up a complete wagon. It came with a D-24 motor and transmission not in the car. Now the issue is will I be able to get a title and register it in California. I was able to find the engine number on the frame below gas filler which is P18-5247U4. The U could be a 0 not sure yet. Has anyone registered a vehicle using the engine number in California? Thanks
  19. Thanks guys. I am almost done assembling all the missing parts on the 49 Suburban. It was a parts car for the previous owner so it has been a bit challenging but at the same time rewarding to see it come together. The rear bumper bracket is one of the last items I need. Still looking!
  20. I wanted to know if a 1950 Suburban rear bumper brackets will fit a 1949 Suburban? Thanks!
  21. The pictures really help. Looks like it fits behind the original guards. It's going to be interesting to see how the top hook and straps come into play. Wonder if this was an aftermarket item if there was such a thing back then. I like the look especially on a Suburban. Thanks
  22. Here's another picture.
  23. I did notice that the spacing of the vertical bars is exactly the same as the bumper guards. So I will assume that they replace the bumper guards with the right bumper Certainly a heavy duty look!
  24. I am putting my 49 Suburban together and ran across this bumper bar stacked with other parts that came with the wagon. I'm not sure if it's for the wagon. Does anyone know what it is and what model it might fit.
  25. Thanks for the comments! I will continue now to adjust hood and move on to other body parts as I'm working from the front to the rear! I will post pictures when I have a complete Suburban!! Thanks
