Odball 1941 Desoto from the land down under!
Lee Exline replied to Lee Exline's topic in P15-D24 Forum
I imported both the Desoto and a Plymouth at the same time but have since sold the Plymouth. Needless to say the stick out like a sore thumb here in middle America! -

1941 Desoto army UTE on Ebay OZ
Lee Exline replied to Lee Exline's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
All UTEs are very uncommon over here in the states! I would love to get more pictures of the other Desoto UTE if you ever drive by it again? If you look behind the 39 Plymouth there is a 39 coupe with the same three window body style. I would love to have a 39 also since the three window coupe style roof is shaped like the top of a bubble it just stands out! -
It's a 1941 Desoto standard UTE for use by the Australian army I Ran across this and wish I could afford it but I need to concentrate on getting my 1956 Desoto UTE restored so I won't be buying it! The ebay OZ auction This may be the only one left? and it looks like they used the same body as the used on the Plymouth (but note the single piece windshield) I would guess the body is by TJ Richards? Of course these were only made in Australia! For those of you that may not be familiar with UTEs they were an Australian hybred car truck that was on the market long before we got the El camino or ranchero here in the states. Here is the 1940 Plymouth brochure And here is my 1956 desoto

here is the 40 Plymouth brochure showing the deluxe cab with quarter windows (Army would have gotten the standard cab) but the image shows a split windshield? and the 39 used a split window? -

The guy finally sent me some photos. Obviously a barn find! Can't tell much since it is packed in so tight and covered in dust. I shrunk the images 75% to get them smaller for posting. If anyone is interested I can forward the larger images to them. I do not know the guy selling it, just trying to get the car to a home that will care for it?

Would it say Chrysler Detroit if it was made in Canada? I would not think so but you never know? -

Here is a picture! I have asked for more including the bed and tailgate since the bed looks like it was replaced? Note the right hand drive and Desoto hubcaps. -
I recieved this picture from a collector in Africa that found the truck in the middle of the karoo desert in So. Africa. And is working on getting it running again. Since this is a Detroit built model it would have been built on the Dodge assembly line and would have the same model series numbers as the Dodge trucks. I have asked for pictures of the truck and will post them when I get them. I am sure some of you guys will be able to decifer this vin plate without any book help and my garage is darned cold right now! The S on the begining is probably the Desoto series ID?

These are local to me but I am not in need of another project. One has a title the other does not. Both need work but I figured if anybody would possibly want these they would be on this forum. I called the guy tonight an he said he still had them and wanted $900 for both Craiglist lsting This is what I call barn fresh!

It looks like a Portugese version they had some really different bodies? It is not an Australian market! I suppose it could be a later modified body that came out as a standard cab and was then extended? Look at the rough areas of the rear cab area. Where did it come from?

Nope just sold it yesterday. The guy had been trying to get over here for a month but the weather did not cooperate. It started right up and we took it for a spin around the block while he struggled a little to find the rear view mirrors and was trying to use the shifter for turn signals. When we got home he said I gotta have it! He drove it up on the trailer and I had to jack it up so he could ge the door open to climb out. He said when he got home he unloaded it in the street in front of his house and slid off into the ditch while going up his driveway on the ice that had formed from the thawing snow of the day. He said it did not get damaged and that he would get it towed out today. I look forward to him showing up with it at some of the meets I am attending with my Desoto.

I hated to do it but today I sold my 1956 Plymouth UTE. Here it is loaded up on the new owners trailer going to it's new home in Davenport Iowa. The guy owns two 1954 Plymouth coupes so this one will fit right into his collection. This was the first time the tires had ever seen snow! It still has the original 1956 Olympic 6-ply 16" Tyres on it since the car only has a little over 20K miles on it. But that gives me the money I need to work on my other UTE. The Desoto is the real keeper since it is the only one known in the states and one of only 275 made ( the Plymouth was one of 3 here and 505 were made)

It's a 97! Yes I am very worried they will total it since I can not replace it for what the book value is. also the trailer hitch is pointing ath the ground and that is not a good sign. I have had the truck since 99 so I like the old workhourse too. I did not get to see the damage to the other guys car but it could not have been good since I still had my reciever hitch in place. It is a ratcheting seat and I am well over 300lbs so that is where it gave way and at 6'6" the headrest just does not go high enough to support my head properly. I also just gave myself a nice new haircut tonight since I kept finding tiny chunks of glass in my scalp I am sure I will gets pains in muscles I forgot I had in the next few days also.

Here are some pictures of my truck after the wreck today on the way into work. The car that hit me was a Mitsubishi Eclipse and since he was slamming on his brakes he was going only approx. 45 MPH on impact. I was stopped waiting on traffic at the stop light. He knocked my truck forward and I stuck the back of the vehicle in front of me. The lady in front got out and took a look at her truck, got back in and drove away. She must not of had insurance because there had to be damage to her truck also? When he hit me the seat I was in broke and my head hit the rear window and broke the glass and the base of my skull hit the frame of the rear window. The box was actually pushed forward and hit the cab of the truck and the tailgate will not open now. I got a nice ride downtown in the back of an ambulance and got to spend 5 hours in emergency. I had CAT scans and X-rays but everything appears to be in order. I am getting sore and stiff and taking Vicodin for the pain. The base of my skull is very tender at this point. And there are some small cuts on the back of my head from the glass but nothing needing stitches. Hate to sound like I am bitchin since it could have been worse! If I was not built so tough I could have been paralyzed this morning. It is amazing how much life can change in such a short time! It looks like they may total my truck? Since it is older I will play hell finding a replacement for it for what they are saying it is worth. Since I am 6'6" I need a truck I can fit in and I also need it to have a hitch and a V-8 to be able to tow my old cars. The only positive thing is I have rental insurance and his insurance (Safeco) will have to pay for a rental until I find a replacement? http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/wreck/wreck1.jpg http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/wreck/wreck2.jpg http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/wreck/wreck3.jpg http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/wreck/wreck4.jpg http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/wreck/wreck5.jpg http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/wreck/wreck6.jpg http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/wreck/wreck7.jpg

The guy that bought the 33 said in the newspaper article that he can not stand the color and will get it painted black as soon as possible. Here is the article in the Sioux City journal -
