  1. Awesome...never even thought of the bike tubes. Thanks guys! I like the plastidip idea...but not sure if it would allow movement enough...might play around with it.
  2. The PO of my truck used foam pipe insulation for chain covers...looks like crud and doesn't hold up very well. What are some suggestions for other material to use for this
  3. For sure under the glove box is not convenient. You need a co-pilot to adjust the heater/vent controls, LOL!
  4. Those look to be the same hubcaps I have on my truck. Mine have just a hint of the original red. After seeing yours I'm sure I want to restore the red on mine. Now to decide on red or black for the wheels or chrome trim rings or both.
  5. My '49 has them under the glove box.
  6. I've been thinking of going with red for my wheels...the poor boy hubcabs still have a trace of red on them...thinking I'll restore the red on them and on some of the badgeing...I like to pick a theme and use it throughout the vehicle...thinking I might use the red for tasteful accents as the theme for this truck.
  7. Good info...thanks guys. Anybody actually make a gasket...or just RTV?
  8. I don't know how it works myself...but I can tell you I've never had an issue with the electric setup on this truck flooding. Truck always starts very easily with this setup.
  9. Cool...sounds good. Would there be any reason to go back to the mechanical pump...other than "authenticity"? I would assume the electric provides as good or better performance and better reliability.
  10. I'll have to look at it again. I believe there is only a place for fuel line in/out...does the vacuum booster type have some sort of additional fitting on it for vacuum? How else might one tell if the pump is of the vacuum booster variety.
  11. The previous owner added an electric fuel pump to my truck. It seems to work well this way so I think I'll leave it. However, the old mechanical pump is still on the block and is leaking some oil around it. I would like to remove the old pump and put some type of plate over the opening on the block. Anybody every done such a thing? I would assume it is a simple as custom fabricating a plate and a gasket using the old pump as a template.
  12. Where about in KC? I live south in the Raymore/Belton area. Would be cool to know someone else in the KC area with a '49.
  13. I noticed the radiator was odd when I got it, but was not sure what it was supposed to look like, LOL! Indeed. The truck does need some love, but it's all fairly minor. Some interior work...brakes and steering...there are a few more drips than I care for so I'll try and stop up some holes with some new gaskets here and there...chrome is not bad, but I'll do some work there too. Gotta loose the crappy rear lights, and i think the fender turn signals and cab markers will go too. It is fun to drive though and always get's attention...but you guys know that I'm sure. It is a 12v conversion. When it comes to mysteries there is more to it. The serials on the frame and engine seem to match and are what it's registered under which correspond to a '49 1/2 ton. The serial on the cab however indicates it came from a '48 1 1/2 ton. So it would appear someone has pieced some of it together at some point. Very astute...there is a removable faceplate AM/FM/CD tucked under the dash. I think I have found an original AM radio that I may install just for looks where the radio "blank" is currently.
  14. I don't think they would look right in your truck, LOL! How's things in the Evergreen state? I have a sister and nephew in the Portland area...and I used to live in Port Angeles.
  15. I promised to post some more pics of my truck. This is just how I got her. It appears other than a new paint job on the exterior most of the truck may be pretty original. The paint on the interior of the cab is a little paler than the exterior...more a of JD green...not really too noticeable until you see the paint line between the two. All in all a good ole' truck, just needs some love and attention to a few items. As soon as the new pellet stove is hooked up in the shop I'll start in on all those little projects...the first of which has to be to loose those horrible trailer lights that someone stuck on for tail lights.
  16. Excellent info...It may be a few weeks before I have time to get into it. I'll report back with my findings.
  17. Great info...I'll read up and tear into it and see what I can do. Would be great if I could go through it and not have to replace it or have someone else rebuild it.
  18. I'm going to re-work the steering on my truck and I'm pretty sure I will end up replacing tie rod ends, drag link, and the steering box. Are there any good sources for a rebuilt steering box? I've sourced the rest of the steering parts I think.
  19. Good info here...thanks. I'm with Hank...would prefer to do this without having to weld if possible.
  20. Thanks for the link to that thread. I had searched but for some reason did not find that.
  21. What have you guys done about seat belts in your trucks? My Dad had an old truck he rebuilt several years ago that had only lap belts. My folks had driven it a fair distance to pick up some cabinets and on the way home they encountered a small pickup that the driver had fallen asleep and crossed the center line on the crest of a hill....he hit them head on. The passenger of the other vehicle was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle and was killed. My Father had some bruised ribs from hitting the steering wheel and my Mother received serious injuries to her head from hitting the metal dash. She broke her jaw in multiple places and lost many teeth in addition to lacerations and a concision...most all of which would have been avoided if she had be wearing a combination shoulder and lap belt. I plan to drive my truck fairly often and I think it makes sense to include the added safety of modern seat belts, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it. I have some ideas but if someone has already done this I would love to have some additional insight.
  22. Took her to the hardware store today. Used some of the advice from you guys and my shifting was pretty smooth...even a couple of downshifts that where pretty darn good if I do say so, LOL!
  23. That makes perfect sense. This is my first time with a non-synrco tranny so I'm learning as I go. Thanks for the info.
