  3. Hi there, I bought an oil filter and its tubing from eBay because my 231 had none. Does anyone have a picture showing the tubing connections to the engine details?
  4. Searched the Internet for the main bearing seal. I had all of the interchange numbers, and none was available, so I went to Bernbaum. NAOA did not have any of the interchange numbers.
  5. I hope to get it back together by Monday or Tuesday. I am painting all of the engine accessories today. I took almost everything off when I decided to start this bearing because I had a cracked exhaust manifold also. Got an NOS one off eBay. I decided to paint the engine and all of the accessories while it was apart.
  6. Update on my rear main seal:I got the top half of the old seal out with some difficulty. The new seal is in and all bolted up to spec. Just have to put the oil pan back on, then we'll see if I did it right! I ended up with a BEST #3675 seal from Andy Bernbaum. $50.50 to my house. OUCH! Couldn't have done this job without all of the help and pictures from you fellow MOPAR guys. Thanks a million. Of note, I sent Bernbaum an email asking why the seal costs so much. It is his number L-156, which in his online catalog is $9.50. He charged me $39.50 plus shipping. Of course, no response from him. Will use Roberts from now on!
  7. When I was a lad of 16, I had a 51 Stude that leaked from the front seal. Twice I pulled it and put a new seal in and it still leaked, although a little less. My Grandpap was a mechanic in the Army after WWI and before WWII. He told me to pull the tranny, remove the seal and polish the shaft with crocus cloth. I did that, replaced the seal and it never leaked again for the 8 more years I drove it. There must have been something on the shaft that, even though it felt smooth, damaged the seal. JS I for got all about that being over 50 years ago until I kept seeing Doc's troubles.

  11. One more question : I have the Felpro(OS915C) oil pan gasket set. It contains 2 neoprene "pins" about 1/8 inch diameter, and about 1 inch long. Where do they go?
  12. Pictures are a big help. Thanks. The instuctions are pretty clear for removing the top half. Do you have detailed instructions for installing the top half?
  13. Sorry. It's not pressed as in hydraulicly pressed, but force-fit. It looks like the top picture.
  14. I finally got the rear main cap out of the car. The seal is a "groove" seal, i.e., it is pressed into the groove on the cap. Now all I have to do is figure the right seal # and get one! Thanks guys for your help!

  16. Unbolted the rear main cap. Cap is loose and freely moves, but no matter what I try, I can't get it out of the engine. It has a lip on it that protrudes into the bell housing, and will not clear the bell housing even if I rotate the crank. Now what?
  17. Well I unbolted the rear main bearing cap. It is nice and loose, but I cannot get it out of the engine! I tried rotating the crank --- no help! There is a lip on it that goes into the bell housing and is keeping it from falling out. Now what?
  18. Thanks. I guess I'll just buck up and remove the bearing cap to see what I actually have. Here's hoping that it can be fixed with just the oil pan and bearing cap removed.
  19. Thanks. The seal I bought is a Best 4162. Is that the wrong seal for a 54 231?
  20. My '48 D24 has a 54 Dodge 231 engine in it. The rear main seal is leaking. The guy in the Auto Parts recommended the 4164 seal kit. I got the oil pan off today, but am kind of afraid to pull the rear main cap because 2 books I have do not show a "rope" seal and that is what the guy gave me. HELP!
  21. I installed a 6 volt + ground, 1 wire alternator on my '36 Plymouth. It works very well. Lights are nice and bright, can run lots of accessories simultaneously. I bought it already set up for 6 volt. As I understand it, the only difference is in the internal regulator ( solid state, can't see the circuit). It is a standard GM 10si with a special regulator. I bought it online from Quick Start. The people there are very helpful. You may even be able to buy the regulator as parts from them.
