We began the cut/buff today. Any paint can be saved!
FlyingDutchman replied to FlyingDutchman's topic in P15-D24 Forum
I asked Chris to do a write up for us all. I'll post it as soon as he's completed it. I can attest that we did have one full week of solid 1000 grit and 2000 grit wet sanding before we began cutting/buffing. I'll post some more pics tomorrow, we moved onto the medium cut today. Funny, in soaking the pads how brown and dirty the water becomes! Paint holds a lot more dirt than people realize! -
In talking to a few people, it's just flat glass and most professional auto glass places can make/cut one for you. I think I'll explore this option as well as some new front windshield glass, they're a bit hazed.

If the steering wheel isn't heavily cracked, I'd be interested in it.

Chris started cutting/buffing my 48 today after a week of wet sanding with 1000-2000 grit. Bare in mind this car sat in a barn for 10 years and I did not repaint it!

The market has totally tanked on old classic cars. It's not 2005, post Enron scandal anymore. When it was unsafe to trust corporations and the market, everyone invested in old cars, then the economy took a dump and the cars are now worth about 1/8th of what they were bringing in 2005. I see people all the time that are like 'Got $250K into this car, will sacrifice at $175K.' Umm, no, you'll settle for the first $60K that shows up. Cars are a losing proposition and it is all about the journey not the destination. I know I can get a basically mint D-24 for about $9K, but I am having fun working on mine and I will probably spent more than $9K to make a car that's worth about $4K in the end. If I were looking for a $40K woody, I certainly wouldn't start on Ebay... I would be hiring a broker or scout to help me find one or seek one independently.

Replacing front floor; accessing master cylinder after?
FlyingDutchman replied to FlyingDutchman's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Yeah, just didn't know if any old bucks new some slick tricks -
Howdy! I need to weld in a new front floor on my D24 sedan. I'm not a huge fan of the hole in the floor to access the master cylinder for adding fluid. Has anyone relocated this or have any tricks that will allow me to have a solid, access hole free front floor but still have access to the master cylinder fill? Thanks guys! -JVP

I started cutting/buffing the car today since it will be a while before I paint it. I also removed the front seat, which I found incredibly easy! and the front carpet to inspect the floor rust/rot and plan a repair.

I need one too, if anyone has another after Todd gets his.
-
Maybe next year when my D24's on the road, I'll have a meet at my house in NH?
-
Thanks gang! Yeah, I'm definitely going to pull it down and take a look first before replacement, but the previous owner stated he thought the car was out of gas because it died while driving so he went to put 5 gallons in and it only took 2 gallons, so maybe it's jammed up bad? Do any of you have experience with these tanks? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-1941-1948-Dodge-Plymouth-Car-Steel-Gas-Tank-16-gallon-Tanks-Inc-/320897868587?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ab700e32b&vxp=mtr#ht_1259wt_231 Any idea where to get a new mechanical fuel pump or should I switch to one of those universal 6v electric ones? Be Well! -JV

Hi Gang! I want to put a new tank in my 48 D-24 sedan. The car has been sitting for 10 years and I am sure it is gelled up. Do you guys know of a good source for a new tank and any tips or things to add or look out for during this repair? Other items I am interested it are a new mechanical fuel pump and a rebuilt carb perhaps on an exchange? Thank you! -Joel V.

What's the deal with rocker moldings/wheel skirts?
FlyingDutchman replied to FlyingDutchman's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Kewl beans, fellas! Let me do some digging and find out what's out in the World. Be Well! -JV -
Howdy! I have a 1948 D24 sedan. Are there any rocker moldings out there in the world or something similar from say a 1948 Ford, etc. or a universal molding company? It's about the only piece that I am missing along with the stone guards. I'm not looking for perfect condition just something to keep the clip holes plugged up and water out. I consider rust 'charm' Also, were there wheel skirts for the D24? There's a set on this coupe: http://www.americandreamcars.com/1948dodgecp101707.jpg I could make some, but I'd really rather not. Be Well! -JVP

My buddy powder coats, and they make a chrome-like finish. I may give that a whirl. This D-24's a survivor/driver so I'm not looking for perfection but I don't want to have my hand exfoliated every time I get in/out of the car
