Project stopped(when it hit a tree)
95ttoplt1 replied to 95ttoplt1's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
You and I both! We were pushing it out to clean up our mess and it rolled over the chalks it was going sooo slow, but when it rolled up to the top of the chalk the chalk rolled. Luckily it's just woods back there. -
So the 53 my girls and I were working on took an unplanned trip out the back door of the shop and now I need some fenders, a grill and a hood. Anyone know of a wrecking yard in the Nashville Tn area that has any of these sitting around?

Rear end swap list.....let's make one

Just slid a 62 Sunliner 9 inch under mine, had to weld on new peches but that was it!! -
The lenth and width are all correct, just the dimples and that little hump by the bed thats different. I actually like these better than the ribbed ones and I paid a pretty penny for them as they are super solid. So I guess I will unbolt the bed and slide them under!
-
Well I managed to find a set of running boards for my 53 and come to find out they are way different. The ones that came off the truck are the ribbed style, the ones I got to replace them are the dimpled style. Problem came in when I go to put them on. The dimpled style are missing a support and have a goofy ridge on the inboard side that won't fit under the bed. So those of you that have these style boards, does the bed need trimmed? trim the running board? or remove the bed to install them? Here is a link to a bunch of pictures of the two. Which is correct for a 53 1/2 ton? Supposedly the ones I bought are off a 53 half ton as well? http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/95ttoplt1/a%20dodge%20truck/

Throttle return spring pictures
95ttoplt1 replied to 95ttoplt1's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
The fast idle cam is working as advertised and the choke opens all the way. If I tap the throttle it will hang just off idle, and then you can just nudge the throttle shaft and it will fall to regular idle. I thought the fast idle cam as well but got it all wd-40'd up and it works like its 1953 again! Any one have a picture of this fenderwell spring? -
Hey guys my throttle wants to stick just above idle and I think I may be missing a spring. In the following link on page 14-5, plate 14-5 it shows the linkage that is on my truck. http://dodgepilothouseclub.org/know/ph_parts/b_14.pdf I have read on here where there may be a spring required off the top of throttle shaft to the inner fender. I did put a spring off the top of this throttle shaft to a little chome bracket I got at the part store, but it just looks cheesey. The inner fender makes more sense. The only other return spring on my truck is the 14-06-01 show in the 14-5 plate. It returns the linkage decently, but doesnt pull the carb all the way back to idle. So do I just have excessive play in the linkage at the carb, or am I missing a spring? Thanks Troy

I seached for a while without any luck as well. I ended up do a rear end swap. I just happened to have a utility trailer that was part of the farm when I bought it and it had a ( inch with 3.55 under it!! Its out of a 62-62 Thunderbird or Sunliner. Width and bolt pattern are a match and it has 11 inch drums on the back.

Justa quick review. I recently got some simple items (front brake shoes and wheel cylinder kits). Long story short my truck has an odd style of non-stepped front wheel cylinders. I had already bought the more common steeped kit from NAPA and just assumed they got the wrong ones. So when I ordered my brake shoes I ordered the front wheel cylinder kits. When they arrived I realized I had recieved the stepped kit again. So I decided I would go back to NAPA and use half of each kit to make it all work. I never called Roberts as they had sent me exactly what was called for on my truck, my truck just has the odd "early style" non stepped. I did mention it on a post here though. Well today I went and checked the mail and there is a little box from Roberts. I opened it up and it was the two 1 3/8 cups I needed!! Thats a pretty cool company that tracks things that close and can figure out from a random internet post what one single customer needs and sends it free of charge!! I will definatley be back, and lord knows I will need alot of part in the future.

Thermostat is replaced and everything filled and topped off. It starts like a dream with the new head gasket and milled head. Now to get the brakes finished and waiting for my gas tank to get here.

1955 Dodge Truck Cooling Sytem Capacity

That sounds about right. I think I read 17 quarts for my 53, but it has a heater. -
Well it runs!! And it purrs like a kitten. I checked the compression on one cyclinder after running it for a minute, and its back down to 90. So hopefully I just had too much oil in it??
-
I think I may have gotten a little more oil than I needed, I was thinking about that last night. I'm not too worried for now, I'll run it and let everything lossen back up and then do another test and see where its at. The front two cylinders were at about 90, I gave them maybe two squirts of oil and they came up to about 120, which was what I was expecting. I kept going and about #4 it didnt seem to respond to the oil, so I gave it two or three more squirts and it jumped to 180. Shocked I started testing the others and the ones that were previously 120 were at 180 now. Not sure but maybe the oil ran off the deck into the cylinders? The plugs I picked up today are noticably shorter than what I had installed and look like they will clear. Someone must have put the hotter plugs in long ago and since the head was stock(hopefully) they never hit. Cam is stock.

So i went back to NAPA today to get wheel cylinders and it turns out that mine are correct! There is an "early" 1 3/8 non stepped, and a "Late" style that is stepped. The part number for the stepped rebuild kit is 6. They dont make a kit for the non-stepped, kinda odd. But I can combine the #6 kit from NAPA and the kit from Roberts to make it all work. The kit from NAPA is a little more complete than the kit you get from Roberts. It comes with a new spring, but they do cost a little more. It was $27 with tax and everything for the kits from NAPA.
