Nose interchangeability
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
I've got too much self-respect to put Ford parts on my Dodge. -
I did a search, and found only one reference to this. I have a '48 1/2 ton that I've been collecting parts for. I recently came across a real nice '50 Fargo 1/2 ton that's complete and in much better shape then mine. The only problem is the nose on the Fargo is beyond repair. Would the two be interchangeable? The one topic I found with the search says that they are from 48 through to 50, but I figured I'd better ask to be sure.

Remaned engine decoding
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Alright, life finally calmed down enough to get back into this! I measured it out (bore and stroke) and it looks like it is indeed a 251! I also just picked up another engine that the owner figured was a 251 (mainly for all the bits mine is missing). It turns over, and is complete minus the air cleaner (with the car bell housing and standard transmission). The number on the block is P23, which unless Canadian numbers are different, is a '52 Plymouth 218 according to the t137 website. Not as awesome, but I was never planning on running it anyways. Could someone post a link to where I could decode the carburetor if possible? It's a Ball & Ball, the numbers stamped on it are B1 D6L2 and 6-595. I'd like to know whether I got lucky and a larger carb was put on at some time that would work well with the 251. Thanks! -
Engine parts compatibility
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Great to know, thanks! -
I have a '52ish 251 for my '48 1/2 ton, but it came with nothing but the engine itself and the distributor. I put an add up for parts locally and there are a few possibilities, but they are from an older engine (ones a '38 and the other a '42). I'm needing the air cleaner, carb, all the linkage parts, starter, generator and flywheel. What year range are these engines compatible with each other? Thanks!

Sorry, it didn't come with a carb, or starter, generator or fuel pump. That's how it got down into my range of affordability! -
Remaned engine decoding
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
I was thinking gaskets and things that I'd need to replace regardless. If what the previous owner said is true, it's got good compression, but uses oil. He figured the oil rings were stuck. -
Remaned engine decoding
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Yeah, I was planning on freshening it up, so I'll just have to messure. I was hoping to figure it out before I tore it apart so I had the right parts on hand to rebuild it. Oh well. Thanks for the info! -

Nope, tried that guy a few times, but never got an answer. Found this one in Nokomis. -
I just picked up what I was told was a 251 from a early '50's truck. It starts and runs good, but uses oil. I just wanted to decode it and make sure I know what I've got. It's what I assume to be a Canadian engine, and has a rebuilders tag on it. I've checked out the t137 site, but nothing matches my number. The stamped number on the top left of the block is 22872, no letters. On the rebuild tag, it says R63 22872. Can anyone help with this?

While I figure out and wait for front end date parts, I've continued to strip the cab so it can be prepped and primed. All I've got left is glass. I need to get it off the frame since there's no way to move it as a unit (no front end or read axle). How heavy is the bare cab? I just need a rough idea of how many guys I need to bribe to help get it on a trailer.

King pin kits, what's best to get?
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Thanks for the suggestions! Rock Auto lists a bunch of kits. Most are listed for B-1-C or D, but as long as the pin is the right size, it should work? The closest NAPA is an hour and a half drive away, so I'll go with Rock Auto. -
It's time to replace the king pins on my '48 1/2 ton while I wait for brake parts to come in. What kits are recomended for quality and price? I asked to kid at the NAPA, and got a look combining fear and confusion. Thanks!

I sent my specs to TCI and B&M, and I'll see what they come back with.

Ok, I put some thought into and checked things out, and I'm going with the MoPar 340 cam. I'm on the hunt for a better geared rear end, the block should be ready in a week or so, so it's down to torque converter now. I've read that I should choose a tc by going 500 rpm over the starting rpm of the cam, and having the stall speed just lower then the cruise rpm. I'm not sure how to go about figuring that. The rpm range of the 340 cam is idle to 5800, the lowest rpm tc I've looked at is 2000 (a B&M). I'll have to measure tire height to figure out the cruise rpm over the weekend (working away from home sucks). Any suggestions?

I've been checking out cams until my eyes have crossed, and something isn't making any sense to me. A bit less then half the cams I've looked at don't list an advertised duration, but duration at .050. A lot of the RV cams I've come across don't list the advertised. So how do the two numbers compare? If I'm looking for a cam with an advertised duration of around 260, what would it be at .050? I have come to a (very) rough understanding of some cam specs, so at least I've got that going for me! I'd like to thank you guys for your time in explaining things to me, I really do appreciate it!

The truck is just a toy. I've got no plans to race it, and I'm not concerned about impressing others. Before I pulled the engine out to rebuild, it was a bone stock engine I was told came out of a '75 Monaco to replace a blown up 318 (the build sheet on the underside of the hood stated it was originally a 318). All I did was swap in a stock 4bbl intake and a Carter AVS. This alone made a fun ride. But oil pressure was low, as was compression, so I figured since it was getting rebuilt I might as well upgrade. I use the truck mostly for driving around town, taking stuff to the dump, the odd trip to work (about 55 miles round trip), and the usual truck stuff. I don't do any towing with it though. I didn't want a crazy race cam or a wild idle, something that won't suck gas too hard, and not be ridiculously loud with a good exhaust system. Just something that'll punch a bit higher then stock. I'll look for a used rear with 3.5x gears, if I can't find one, I'll just get a new gear set and rebuild my rear end. The rims are stock aluminum turbines with 235/75r15 tires.
-
Well, my rear end is an 8 1/4 non posi unit, so finding one with a better gear ratio shouldn't be real hard. I had planned on changing it out down the road anyways. I'm not too worried about the "stuck in traffic" characteristics since this is a toy and not a daily driver. The 2000 people population here doesn't really make for traffic of any kind anyways. Vacuum wise, as long as it doesn't interfere with the power brakes, I'm fine with it. So, with a better gear ratio, would I be better off with the 340 spec cam, or an RV cam?

My truck is just a regular 1/2 ton, so maybe a wee bit lighter then the Ramcharger, but not much I'd guess. These two were recommended by a fellow at work, and the Summit website says both would be good for a 9:1 build, so I figured I'd see what people thought. I've heard that the 340 cam works well in a 360, but that MoPar doesn't offer it anymore? I'll check it out a bit more and see what I find. Thanks for the reply!

Hello, I'm in the midst of building a 360 for my '83 Ram Prospector, and I'm in need if opinions on cam selection. So far the block has been bored 30 over, 9:1 pistons, stock heads, an old LD340 intake with a Thermoquad and headers. The truck is being built as a fun cruiser. It has a stock 727 auto, 2.92 read end and 2wd. I'm looking at two Summit Racing cam kits. SUM-K6900- 278/288 dur. .421/.444 lift, 1500-5000 rpm. SUM-K6901- 276/288 dur. .441/.441 lift, 1800-5000 rpm. Cam numbers have always been over my head, so any thoughts or recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The plan is to get a whole parts truck, then I've got everything I'd need.

Difference In 1/2 And 3/4 Tons
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Went and took a look at it, but passed it up. The pictures looked way better then the truck did. Oh well, I'll just keep plunking away at mine. Thanks for the info! It'll come in handy the next time I come across another one. -
Just wondering if anyone has done this into a stock 1/2 ton frame? The search only brought up v8's. I'm hoping it could be done without cutting the firewall or moving the rad. I think I'd be a nice engine for a cruiser, as I've got a Dakota rear end ready to pick up for it, as well as the front disk conversion kit. I'd go with a Magnum, as I'd heard the carbed 3.9's were dogs. Any thoughts?

Difference In 1/2 And 3/4 Tons
furiousgeorge replied to furiousgeorge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Thanks for the info! He's not sure of the year, its his guess. These are the only pics of it he had. -
I found a decent looking '52 (he thinks) 3/4 ton locally for a good price, and was just wondering what body parts interchange between it and my '48 1/2 ton? Mine came as a pile of parts and it becoming a bit overwhelming! Since this one is complete so far as I can tell from pictures, I figured it would be much easier to rebuild it and use mine for parts. I tried the search, but kept rejecting what I'd search for?
