Thanks, is the wire on the right in pic just above the fuse the yellow wire going to carb? or the one on the left? owner before me added a newer aftermarket relay that is to the left of this pic of relay and it only has H, not TH. all my other wires are connected to trans components its just one to carb giving me a problem. thanks for photo

Ive got my 48 Chrysler New Yorker L8 running great after some replaced electronics. And is driving in high gear fine. Someone had posted pics of the 2 wires running from relay to carb itself on this site but cant find it. I have the shop manual but it doesnt have clear wiring diagrams for relay to carb. Anyone out there have them? Thanks
  9. A few years ago I helped a friend upgrade his 1960 Bugeye Sprite from points to Petronix. We had an awful time trying to adjust its points in such a cramped space. It was a positive ground as well. After installing the Petronix solid state ignition module it ran perfectly. Also kept the points and components just in case as a backup.
  10. Autolite components are now so cheaply made in China or India, that I Dont trust the quality, or design anymore. If I can get a Solid State ignition to work well, with Petronix, I'll never go back to points again.
  11. I've done Petronix upgrades to at least 3, 1960s cars and havent had any problems. Im hoping it wont be a problem in my 48 Chrysler. I've still got the old points in and car is running so will leave for now. Points are so cheaply made these days and have to be adjusted every change in seasons. Im a firm believer in solid state upgrades like Petronix, but will keep old points as a backup. Thanks for the replies.

The Prestolite number was IGT-4201 1, and only numbers Petronix needed was IGT-4201. I was very happy I was able to make the number more readable because couldnt order the upgrade unit without it.

I had a difficult time reading the unreadable Prestolite model number, so got creative and painted it with Liquid Gold. surprisingly it did make numbers readable with a camera scope. Petronix electronic ignition model number, PNX-1587P6 is the one for this distributor. P6 is positive ground and 6Volt. Thanks for replies
  15. trying to uprade my old points on a 1948 Chrysler L8 to a petronix setup has anyone on this site done that?

Im trying to upgrade my old points distribution system with a 6 volt pos ground Petronix system. most distributors of my 1948 Chrysler New Yorker L8 were made by Prestolite, unfortunately mt distributor tag is unreadable so cant give more specifics to Petronix tech dept. Has anyone on this site done a similiar conversion with a straight 8 Chrysler car?

Thanks for the replies. I removed the access panel on floorpan to check out what was what on the solonoid, governor and interrupter. thankfully all were there with updated wires connected. I was actually shocked and relieved. Now just have to trace wires to relay and then to carb. I hope I dont have to replace the relay.

thanks for the reply. Ive got both shop manual and the one for trans. this should be either a M5 or M6 trans. Im thinking the guys before me didnt know how or want to connect electrical from trans to carb and Im not thrilled doing myself either. Hopefully its still driveable in second and 3rd gears as it is. Ive also got a good wiring diagram just not something i like doing myself in my driveway, esp with the tests manuals want you to do

I recently purchased a 1948 Chrysler New Yorker that was supposed to have been in running and driving condition, but the electrical was disconnected for its fluid drive. Most of the guys who had experience with fluid drives are either dead or retired, or both. I'm rebuilding carb and fuel pump and hope to have it at least running better after I install them. can you drive this fluid drive in 2nd and 3rd driving speeds without having the electrical connected? I know it wont shift as designed and probably will not have kickdown working. Defintitely, more of a project that I wanted to get involved in. Most shops I have worked with dont like or know how to work on pre 55 cars.
