Large oil leak from fuel pump area-251 flathead
58Regent replied to 58Regent's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Thanks guys. I'll have a closer look. Todd -
I have a fairly large oil leak at the fuel pump on my 251 flathead. Is it usually the gasket or is it possible for oil to get into the pump housing and leak? My fuel pump has a couple of slotted screws on the bottom which were both quite wet with oil. Pic: If it's the gasket, is it readily available? Anything I should know before I attempt to remove the pump for inspection? This is my first flathead. Thanks Todd

Using an electric fuel pump with a mechanical pump
58Regent replied to 58Regent's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Is there an easy way to identify a solenoid type pump? Thanks Todd -
I've read some posts on here where folks have an electric fuel pump but have also kept the mechanical pump with the electric pump being used only to prime the carb. I would like to do the same thing but have some questions. 1) Can I mount the electric pump on the frame before the mechanical pump? Will the mechanical pump be able to pump fuel through the electric pump when the electric pump is not turned on? 2) Will the electric pump be able to pump fuel through the mechanical pump when the car is not running (to prime the carb)? If so, can this damage the mechanical pump? 3) Would it be better to just bypass the mechanical pump altogether and run the electric pump all the time? Thanks Todd

What makes the Spitfire head different from the original? I do like the looks of it and would mind putting one of them on my 251 as well as a factory dual carb, split manifold. If anyone has these parts and wants to part with them let me know. Thanks Todd

I like the idea of having the pump on a pushbutton for priming the carb only and stick to the mechanical pump when the engine is running. Would fuel still flow through an electric pump if it's not running?

Will those Langdon headers fit a 25" or are they for the 23"?

Thanks guys. I'll try to get the id off my distributor. My car is a little newer (58) so I'll need one that runs off 12v.

Does anyone know what the part number is for the Pertronix point eliminator kit for our Flatheads? Thanks Todd

It's pretty consistent, quieting down a touch when warmed up. I got my handy dandy mechanics stethoscope out tonight (it was still in the package unopened!) and it seemed to be loudest at the top, front of the engine. The good news is my new frost plug isn't leaking! Todd

The 251 in my 58 Dodge has a ticking sound. Is this normal? Should the valves be adjusted? It's definitely not a bottom end knock, more a sewing machine tick. Any suggestions? Thanks Todd

Well, I got one freeze plug replaced tonight. Only hitch was I was unable to get that draincock loose on the block so we did it the quick and easy way- let it run out when I pulled the plug. I followed the advice I found on here and it went well. I'm letting the sealant sit for 24 hours before I add coolant and start the car. It seemed to fit nice and tight after using the ball peen hammer method. Fingers crossed it doesn't leak! Todd

I'm going to replace the first frost plug (if you look at the photo, you'll see it just "behind" the generator covered in silicone sealant!). Do I need to drain any coolant prior to removing this plug or does the level drop below it once the engine cools down? Thanks Todd

Thanks for the invite! We often go to the cruise night in London on Saturday nights at Canadian Tire. It's about 30 minutes from my home and is usually packed.
