  1. Ryan, I got the same rubbers about 18 months ago, I sent my originals to Steeles to show the difference. I was ignorant of the different quarterlight frames at the time, quick learning curve. Steeles just returned my samples with no comment or reply. I did not work out your method of cut and shut, sound like a good move . I had so much trouble getting frames to fit back in the door, mine will stay there now. Gordon W
  2. I left six of the longest leaves in the rear on mine, front as stock. Originally it had eleven leaves and sat quite high at the back. Its now OK , even with the caravan attatched . I would suggest leaving it alone until project is complete, its not hard to remove springs later. Gordon W
  3. Well thanks very much for all the good responses. We have not been sitting still , have run up about 400 miles since last post and very happy with my ute. Have had an addition to the fleet as well, did we get some good comments at recent Bluebird Festival, with the van. Gordon W
  4. I have just been through this exercise to replace sender unit. I ordered (TAN-ORG Fuel Tank Sending Unit Early Ford & Mopar Type 5 Hole Design - 73-10 Ohms) @ $35.00) from http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=276/category_id=62/home_id=62/mode=prod/prd276.htm My ute does have everything lined up thru the cab and was easy to access. I removed the top plate from original sender and the new one as well.Some trimming of the new sender post was needed to fit it into the raised impression of the original sender,but nothing any handy owner cannot do. Also soldered the new post to original top plate sufficient to provide good electrical contact. A small amount of tin work must be filed away to slightly enlarge the hole in the tank, nothing serious though, to get float and sender through. I have converted the ute to 12 volt and inserted a voltage reducer before the fuel gauge , all works well. Gordon W
  5. Hi Jim, you will need plenty of detergent as lube and lots of patience. I did my own because nobody would tackle the job. I found having the new rubber fitted to the glass for days beforehand pays dividends, even use masking tape to pull rubber tight onto glass. Thus the rubber is starting to form to the shape.From inside the cab work the edge closest to the door as far as you can into position, I did start with heavy string in the rubber but found more success just persuading the rubber over the bodywork with something plastic. Lots of playing with the rubber, much hitting with hand or rubber mallet(gently) , after some hours you will look at the rubber and it has gone into place. I am not offering my services. Gordon W
  6. I had my 1949 Dodge Ute pass mechanical inspection for licencing today, its been hanging around since 1994 and not licenced since 1974 in another state of Aus. Problem now is that Transport WA wants proof that I own it. Was given to me by my wifes parents in 1994, they have both passed on since then but I am the executor of their estates. It seems that I must provide copies of death certificates, wills and my executor appointment by supreme court, before Transport will accept my Statuary Declaration that I am the owner. Isnt Government authority wonderful?

  8. Can ony member advise the tare weight of a Pilothouse ute? I have an original drivers handbook and several workshop manuals but nowhere can I find the weight. It is needed for licensing purposes. An Ozzie estimate would be good but any advise is welcome. Thanks Gordon W

  10. I am about to wire up my fuel gauge but I have converted to 12 volt. I have been wondering how to go about this, will a 6 volt globe in series with the gauge work? Will a voltage dropper be a better alternative? Gordon W

  13. Mark, I have been looking at your photos on post dated 12-13-11, in this subject. On the desk is a dark metal panel, has a hole thru it and is twisted ,can you please tell me where it fits on the Dodge? Mine has been apart for 12 years and that is about the only panel I cannot find a place for. I was about to ask the forum when I saw your pics. Gordon w

  19. Progressing this thread further, I have purchased a Steeles Rubber catalogue and have worked out that the following are the part numbers required. As those of us down under in Oz cannot just slip back to Steeles I would appreciate any help members can give in checking they are correct parts for 1948/50 Pilothouse with side rear glass and airvents. Have you used these numbers? Rear window rubber,40-0406-81. Side rear window rubber,40-0420-77.Vent window rubber,40-0466-55 and 70-1432-56.Windscreen Rubber,40-332-50. Door rubber,40-0495-73.Cowl seal,40-0245-54. Fuel Filler Grommet,70-1616-39. Any advise is most welcome. A successfull end result will probably mean three sets of rubber being exported to Oz and boost your countries economy greatly. Gordon W in West Oz
