  1. Merle, thanks. If you look close the front backing plate flange has been messed with. Conclusion, is at some time 11" 3/4 T hubs were installed.
  2. So do the 1956 C series 1/2 tons have the bolt type lugs and 3/4 have the lugs? Just to give me a reference, what do want for your axle ?
  3. All indications are that it is a 1/2 ton. Would then the front hubs have been replaced and rear is stock? Do the fronts look like the 47-53 trucks? With lugs ?

  5. I have a 1956 C series, so don't know if some parts are the same as Pilot House truck, but here goes. I'm just now starting to look at it more closely and discovered wheel and hub differences from front to rear. Front hubs are 5 on 5 with lug studs. Rear hubs are 5 on 4 1/2" with lug bolts. The wheels , 3 are 5 on 5 15 " with hub cap clips , but one is 5 on 5 but no hub cap clips. The other 2 appear to be off a car and were on the rear both 5 on 4 1/2" So what do I have ?
  6. I'll keep you in mind:cool: Here it was when I bought it in LA. Sat in sellers back yard 5 years after he bought from original owner just 10 miles from me. So it came home I guess:rolleyes: Last pic is on my trailer in front of my home. Now it sits in my back yard:D Ya Reg I was thinking of the dual "in and out" hop up rather than the V8.
  7. Yes they did have V8 as an option. I found a restored one in Los Angeles and he wants about the same amount of money I was planning on putting into mine, but I kinda want to do mine as I want to.

  9. Thanks all for the input. I am inclined to use the stock six, which is a 230 ci with a single barrel carb.1956 models went to 12 volt system, although I do like the idea of and alternator I have to rewire the whole thing anyway. Going to other places on this forum I found conversations about rebuilding in the frame as well as pulling engines out. My preference is to get it out along with trans so everything can be checked and redone. I mostly wanted to find out about parts availability for the engine. The only "WORK" the truck will do is pull a small 13 ' camper trailer once in a while.
  10. I have a 1956 D100 truck, with six and 3 speed trans. As best I can determine the truck is stock and appears to be not molested. The body has a little rust at the bottom of each door and a small cancer spot at the running board attachment points to rear fenders.The bed wood needs to be replaced as does the windshield glass and rubber seals,and of course repaint. Only one small dent in front fender. That's it. So with a good body to restore, I'm at the point of what to do with the motive power. Do I rebuild the stock engine with the standard gear box or go to extreme and install a V8 and auto. As it is now the engine will turn over by hand , the head is off, the clutch dose not engage and pedal is sitting down on the floor. All components appear to there, ie generator carb ,starter etc.........I removed the tangled mess of wiring. So my real question is what is the best way and control cost ( I'm on a budget ) in order to rebuild that engine myself. Are parts available ,if needed ,like bearings pistons, rings, cams. ? Looks like the decision is being made as I write to skip the V8 conversion:D The way I intend to use it ,is just a nice cruiser, I already own a 1964 D100 for serious hauling. It has a 318 poly in it. Any thoughts from you guys?

  14. Went back and reread his message. The recommendation was 904,998,A500 The reference to ratio is the A500. Is that an overdrive unit? edit "Further investigation it is an OD trans"
  15. Well got a response from bacchus lane@yahoo.com. He is recommending a 904 trans for it's final drive ratio.He makes an adapter to the six as you know. As I don't know a thing about Mopar transmissions, I've started a research of this forum and came up with some info to start my education. Just a couple of weeks ago, 8/13/09 to be exact,budstruck started a thread here on a trans and engine combo he bought .He got several responses, including a nice list of descriptions for a 904 from 48dodger. So going to begin a lookout for 904 and 727 so I can identify them. This is where the fun begins:D:D Any further info from you guys, I'm all ears. Hewy ( aka happyhewy )

  17. So far I have found Wilcap make the Chrysler six adapter for the GM 700r. I do want to keep the truck all MoPar. Just my thing:)So I will keep digging. Also the 230 crank installed in a 218 improves the torque, so assume the stroke is longer than a 218. I'm searching Allpar now for specs.
  18. kencombs and grey beard. Nice to see somebody else doing this, I am gathering information and will be starting the conversion this coming winter probably 2010. I have a 318 poly that I was thinking about using with a 727, but I like the idea of keeping the flat head. Now that I found out it is a 230 that's even better. Where can I find more specs on these engines ? As I said I'm gathering info now. The engine will be pulled and rebuilt 1st, :rolleyes:well that's a good idea. So as times goes I will be asking more questions.
  19. This is very possible as I'm the third owner, but the guy I bought it from did nothing but park it for a few years but ,as the story goes, didn't do anything to it. He did say the original owner did make a swap of the front axle to a later one, and included an extra later model rear. Being new to MoPars I can't verify what the the axle is ,year size etc....... I guess what I'm saying is the engine could very well be a transplant as you pointed out. That's OK by me as I'm making plans to change things anyway. Thanks for your input.
  20. I have a 1956 Dodge pickup with a six and a 3 speed. A few questions, I am considering switching the transmission to an automatic, will a later 727 bolt up? Need and adapter? If so are the adapters available? The truck has the original rear axle that I will change to a later year in order to get wheel studs instead of wheel bolts. What problems am I going to run into, switching the backing plates to accommodate parking brakes in place of the drive shaft brake drum? Is the 1956 six a 218 or 230? How do find out? The engine number is D30 253034. Hewy

    Introducing myself.Just joined yesterday and want to say hello.I have a parts for sale ad, but that's not why I joined.Back in the day, way back, I owned and drove a 1947 P15 Club Coupe and drove it from Calif to Texas and back after being discharged from the Air Force.Pulled a small uhaul trailer with our worldly belongings and a new baby boy in the back seat snuggled up in a card board box with soft blankets to keep him warm. I guess it was a child seat of the time:o, and a case of oil to feed the Plymouth. I now have another flat head six this time contained in a 1956 Dodge D100 . Hope you all don't mind me being here ,but can't find another suitable site. Not that this site is second choice by any means. I have been looking in here for several years. Hoping I can ask for info as I go along and get the 56 back on the road.
