buds truck Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 I read some of the archived threads about engine removal, but it all didn't register. the front sheet metal is off the truck, does the master cyl need to come out with the crossmember/ how about the column interference? looks tight. if I take the cover off the floor, will the pedals come out without damaging the floor? I want to take the engine and trans out together. How do you get the steering wheel off the column? so many questions, so little time,..... Bud Quote
grey beard Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 Steering wheels are a BEAR to pull. Best bed is with a bearing splitter ande rthree jaw puller. Pedals are nasty to remove even with all the removable floor boards out of the way. Steering box only comes out with the column. None of this is easy. My suggestion is to pull first the engine, and then you can get to that crowded area of the pedals/steering box, etc. to see what must come out next. It is my understanding that the pedals must come off the clutch cross shaft before the gear box can be removed. This is definitely NOT a small block v-8 with a plwer glide. Good luck:) Quote
streamer Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 I just took the engine out of my 48' B1B and it took a total of about 4 hours. I had all the front body parts off, took off the battery ground wire, undid the drive shaft from the three speed transmission, removed the two long floor boards, removed the brake and clutch peddles, unbolted the master cylinder and wire tied it to the frame, unhooked all the control cables and fuel lines, supproted the the trans. and unbolted it from the bellhousing, remove all the bolts from the motor mounts and as you lift her out slide, the trans back off the engine. This was the first time I ever removed an engine, except for VWs, and it was not to bad. I did have a helper who was very knowledgeable. Once out of the truck and resting on an old truck tire, I removed the clutch, starter, bellhousing, flywheel etc. Once on an engine stand I removed all the other parts down to the block and then off to the rebuilder. Good luck, if I can do it anyone can!! Quote

I prefer not to damage anything as this is a very good runner and has been sold to a member of the forum. Bud Quote
MMcKinney Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 Bud, When I pull my engine/trans conbination last week, the only bolt holes I could find were just above the oil pan rail back near transmision belhousing. I had to clean them out of lots of dirt and oil and I had to find just the right length bolt to tighten the chain against the block. I found the same bolt hole on either side of the block. It looks as though those two holes seem to balance the engine/trans combination quite well, although I still bolted the chain in a third place off the front engine mount too just to be sure the engine would not flip over on the engine hoist. grey beard Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 Mr. Streamer, How did you get your brakwe pedal off the clutch cross shaft? Mine hit the steering column and wouldn't come off without forcing the left side cab floor up more than a foot. Tough operation at my place . . . Quote
streamer Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 I removed the upper and middle floor boards --maybe fifteen screws and then had plenty of room to slide them off. Quote
