Norm:

I just went through the fuel guage issue. As a matter of interest I learned in the "process" that the fuel guage I found ( NOS) needed calibration as it was not registering accurately. Upon adjusting per the service manual, I now have the satisfaction of a functioning and accurate guage.

Good Luck

Norm...I also bought a NOS gauge off of Ebay. When I put in the 12v alternator, I had to buy one of those voltage reducers and connected that between the gauge and the wire coming from the ignition. Now, once I turn on the ignition, the needle move almost instantly past the "full" mark and stays there until I shut the engine off. It doesn't even wait to heat up, it seems. I don't know what's wrong now, but I'm tired of messing with it and trying to guess. I've used the book to troubleshoot, but still can't seem to solve the problem. So I just make sure I have gas in the tank until I can see if the guy that's doing the wiring can figure out something. It would be nice to have an accurate reading, but it's not worth stressing out over...not yet, at least.

Several years ago I converted a '39 Buick to 12V. I didn't do anything to the fuel gauge system and it works great. Granted the P-15 system works off of a 2 wire heating system but is it possible that voltage doesn't make a difference?

I have been having trouble with my P-15 sending unit. I bought one from Roberts Motors and installed it thinking my troubles were over. When the fuel level got below half, the gauge read empty. I pulled the sending unit and checked it by moving the float. It worked. When I put it back in everything worked right. I suspect that I might have had a bad connection on the sender but I'm not sure. There also is a dent in the lower back section of the tank that I tried unsucessfully to knock out completely.
