bob westphal Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 I have been using detergent oil in everything I work on and drive with no signs of any problem. Old or new. Why do you use non-detergent oil in your car? Quote
Justin Slingsby Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 I use straight 30 non detergent as well. Maybe because oil didn't have as many detergents in it originally and I am running a 56 year old motor that is untouched. I also ran diesel engine oil for awhile partially for the same purpose. Quote
martybose Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 This thread brought back memories! My first car was a 1954 Volvo PV444; I found it on a lot and bought it for $600. What I didn't know was that the previous owner used non-detergent oil. I found out after the first time I had the oil changed, and the oil pressure went wacko. The detergent was loosening up many years of crud, and it was plugging up the oil filter! I wound up changing filters every week or so for about 6 weeks, then things settled down. But the engine was very loose after that; the time that the starter failed, I was able to push start it by putting the car in second gear with the ignition on and the clutch engaged, and pushing the car from the driver's door frame! Ah, to be young and stupid again ......... Marty Quote
