Norm's Coupe Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Just stopped at the gas station to pick up a few packs of cigarettes. Didn't need gas but looked at the sign and it said $3.46 per gallon for regular. At first I thought thats high. Now don't get me wrong, I don't like paying that price any more than anyone else does. However, if you think about it, is it really that high? Back in 1960 minimum wage was only around $1.00 per hour. Then I compared the price of a pack of cigarettes in 1960. Gas about 20 to 25 cents per gallon. They were only about 20 to 25 cents a pack compared to close to $4.00 per pack today. A gallon of milk was about 80 cents back then compared to about $3.00 today. So.........when you compare gas prices to todays minimum wages and the general cost of other staples of life the gas prices are right in about the same range of increase. They are just catching up with other market prices of today. With that in mind, there is only two major reasons everyone thinks so much about the price of gas increasing so much, in my opinion anyway. That's the media harping everyday about how expensive the gas is. That and the fact that we've been spoiled by cheap gas for years in between 1960 and now. As pointed out, it's not any more expensive than 1960 when you take wages and inflation into consideration. Quote
martybose Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Hey, if they said that they would guarantee that the extra taxes would go straight to fixing our roads, I'd happily spend more for gasoline! Marty Quote
