steveplym Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Well the 218 install project continues. I have the motor and tranny in the car. Still need to get the clutch hooked up, install radiator and support, distributor, plugs and wires, and carb too. Went ahead and painted everything under the hood single stage black. I know the firewall should be all body color, but I like it black. Also just finished painting the radiator tonight, so it should be ready to go in this weekend. Probably about a good 2 days work from getting it ready to fire up. Here's a few pics of the project. Thanks to Normspeed for his tips on getting the correct bolts in the timing chain cover. I forgot to do that and saw that here on the forum a few days ago. Figured I should change them over now before I get the radiator and support in. I don't want any leaks. Got the right bolts from my spare 218 and put permatex thread sealant on them. Hopefully that will prevent any coolant leaks. These are the correct bolts with the circles in the top. The seal better in the holes that go into the water jackets. Quote
eric wissing Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Steve, it does look real good. The black looks good too. Eric Quote
Normspeed Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Looks good. This is the fun part, putting together all those fresh clean parts. Like a big fun puzzle. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Steve, That looks amazing. I can't wait till I get to that part of my project. Was the engine originally silver? I thought I read once that they came out of the factory like that. I did mine in fire engine red and gloss black but now I wish I'd done it in silver. What kind of paint are you using? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Lookin' good there, Steve. Joe: Yes, originally....the engines were silver. I personally like the silver and black color scheme.....so this is what mine looks like. I last used the POR 15 engine paint applied with a brush. Has lasted better than any spray can i ever used. Cost about $15 for this can, but only took maybe 20% of it to do the whole motor. Others have used different things and are satisfied. Quote

I actually ordered my paint from Eastwood. Single stage black paint is Sherwin-Williams from Carquest. The silver paint and the radiator paint is from Eastwood. The name on the can I got from Eastwood said "Hy-Tech". Really pretty good stuff. Dries quick, will just need to see how it lasts under operating conditions. Manifold paint is from Eastwood too. I've used it for other engines I've built and it works good. Comes in several different colors. Usually have to recoat it once a year to keep it looking fresh. I've used the Por-15 stuff too that Bob used and it works good as well. Quote
