My first car as a teenager was a Red 1946 Ford. The little Volvo looked just like it my eyes so that was my main modivation for purchase, other than I was sick and tired of my 1955 Ford. I bought that Volvo new in downtown Los Angeles and found the Moon hubcaps in Culver City. I just loved to drive that car, first one that I had with rack and pinion steering and it stuck to the road. I spent a lot of time in the Angeles Oaks area above Mentone California and raced down CA38 to see how fast I could go. I bought seat belts because of that ride so that I could stay in the seat while cornering. A few years ago, I tried to find one as a hobby car but (my wife said, hey you had that why again?) never found one. Friends said that was because they were bought by race drivers. Oh well, I now have a Pilothouse pickup instead. Dennis Quote
62rebelP23 Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 British and most other European cars were taxed by engine displacment for a very long time, which resulted in small, low HP engines and resultantly small, light cars for the most part. had we been saddled with the same formula we would have suffered likewise! i believe also that especially in Scandinavian countries the interior room and excellent heaters on American cars were appreciated more; consider the normal winter garb of Northern Europe and now imagine trying to drive a Mini Cooper dressed that way! size 12 overshoes and double-clutching? HAH! aside; it's very nice to have input from all over the globe with insights into what seemed to be a purely American hobby! Quote
PatS.... Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 The Volvo's were the only import in the 60' and 70's that would run and drive in our winters here. Not many Japanese cars and they were bad and the English cars were horrible winter cars. All the Volvo's died a natural death with lots of miles on 'em. The Japanese and English...Oh and the French as well...were scrapped with low miles because they couldn't hack it. Quote
