A couple of years ago I built my cross frame boards for the bed of my 1940 Plymouth truck. The ones that came off were in 2 pieces so I built mine with a slot in the middle to put the carriage bolts through. Today I was removing the carriage bolts from my old bed strips and they have square holes but the long bolts that go through the cross members are counter sunk and a small opening that the carriage bolt does not go through. 
 

I looked at pictures of the cross members for sale and they don’t have a slot so I guess they are supposed to take screws. I guess at this point I’ll use carriage bolts everywhere. 

 

Also I took a screen shot of the instructions for building the wood strips but didn’t get the chart below. Does someone have the link to that discussion?
