piston ring notches up or down

On the top two piston rings, there is a notch on one inner edge. Should this notch be positioned up or down? What is the purpose of the notch?

I'm not sure what you mean by a "notch"?

Most compression rings have a "dot" on the top surface of the ring that indicates the top side. This "dot" is a round depression in the surface about 1/16" diameter.

Never saw a new set of rings that did not have instructions with them. Typically any dot or mark goes up, from my experience. LOL:)
