Compressor Deal

Took a look a few weeks ago at the Kobalt 80 gallon two-stage compressor Lowe's is selling. It looked good for my use - cast iron two stage with a 5HP motor. Higher RPMs on the motor than I'd like, but American made, 175 lbs max and 17.5 CFM at 90 PSI, and at $780, not too bad in the price department.

Went back after deciding to buy one - discontinued! Won't be ordering any more. When I asked why, the guy said Kobalt is probably coming out with a new (read higher-priced) model sometime in the future and they're selling the heck out of the 60 gallon single stage models anyway.

They had one 80 gallon two-stage sitiing on the floor, never been run, perfect condition. I ask the sales guy if they'll give me a discount since it's a floor model. Maybe, but the head guy is out to lunch, I'll have to wait till he gets back. It figures, I'm on my way to a doctor's appointment that afternoon. I hang around a while, then ask the guy when is the boss going to show? He calls the boss (who's still at lunch), who tells him to get the second banana to shoot me a price.

He comes out, looks at the compressor and says $500 and he'll throw in the delivery. Bought it, love it. I'd head for Loews and see if you can make a deal. The sales guy did say that the head guy would never have gone that low, so maybe I got very, very lucky.

Sounds like a great deal RT. Some day when I have a real garage, I'll be looking for a large setup like that. Meanwhile I gotta stay more portable. The pics show my 60 X 11 paved RV parking/front yard. (I live in a rear house)

BTW, in the first photo, cosidering there were six guys present, you could probably figure out why we were laughing. Look at the guy holding the socket extensions:p

Bob, that one in your shop was a keeper in my book. The one in my driveway belongs to a guy in Florida. He and the others drove out for the June L.A. Roadster Show. The Phaeton is a beauty. All steel, small block ford with EFI, the hood raises and lowers on small hydraulics. On the trip from Fla he hit an alligator (the thrown tire tread kind) and tore up an oil cooler underneath so we were repairing it for his trip home. The owner told me he bought the car fully restored, a concours type resto, and then he street rodded it. A very nice conversion. I guess nowadays you call that a resto-rod in Barrett Jackson terminology.
